Hi!
I'm a newbie who is trying to install the system. Step by step I am getting there. My front and backend are running now.
When I watch TV with knoppmyth I only see snow (black screen with noise). It is like the entered frequention during the setup is incorrect. I am sure I use the correct freqences (checked it with the tv which is working ok). I am using a PVR-500 as TV-card.
What do you have to enter as frequention, Hz, KHz or MHz? Maybe I made a mistake here.
Could you please give me some tips? As I said before, I am new with linux and mythtv and don't know all the command, but I am willing to learn
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Victor

Start with this troubleshooting page on the wiki. Be sure to follow the links to other procedures where appropriate, especially the links to the CheckingLogFiles page.
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV
If it's not something obvious, post your log extracts here for us to help you with.
OBTW - More details of your hardware, your locale, what version of KnoppMyth you've installed, ... would help us give you a better answer.

tjc, I checked the link but I don't know what I am doing wrong... So here more information you asked....
My location: The Netherlands
KnoppMyth version: The lates R5E50
Hardware:
Silverstone LC11S-M300 (silver + multimedia)
Nvidea chipset 6200 videocard
haugpage PVR-500
MSI K9MM-V Motherboard (VIA K8M800+8237R Chipset based)
AMD AM2 3500+
512 MB
It seems like the PVR-500 is recognised (I don't see any errors in the logfiles), so properly I do something wrong with the configuration of the channels/frequency.
The list with the frequentions is http://www.upc.nl/frequencies_gm.php?GM=0599
Hope this is enough information? If you need more info, please ask me.
Thanks again for your help!
Regards,
Victor

Do you have any kind of program guide setup under "3. Video Sources" and "4. Input Connection" that uses it? I don't remember what your local "grabber" is called, but there are a couple Dutch users in the forums who might... Probably "tv_grab_nl", or "tv_grab_nl_wolf", although tv_grab_be (which includes a list of Dutch channels), tv_grab_de, and tv_grab_fr might also work...
In any case, without a Video Source "channel lineup" and an Input Connection tell which hardware connection to use with it, MythTV doesn't know where to send tuning commands and for what channel.

If he's trying to pick up Dutch Analogue TV channels, he will have some problems as Holland has went fully digital for terrestrial transmission. References here and here.

Bruce, That is not totally truth. If have analog cable in the Netherlands, almost everybody in the Netherlands has cable. Therefore the need for an analog signal broadcasted through the air is small, and only for a few amount of people. The broadcasted signal through the air is only digital since about one month. But that doesn't effect me because I use cable with analog signal.
Tjc, I use tv_grab_nl_gert to retrieve program information. And I think it works, because when I start watching television I see on screen information like the program name and the start en endtime of that program. I only don't see the program itself, but a black screen with some snow... I also don't see the description of the program in the on screen display.

Quote: But that doesn't effect me because I use cable with analog signal. Ah, I thought it was a OTA transmission.
In the Channel Editor, on the second screen for each channel (the one where the sliders for Brightness are), you can enter the channel number or the frequency in Hz. The frequencies given in your link are in MHz.
The active channels do seem to be very close together, I'm surprised there is no co-channel interference.

Did you set the frequency for e.g. Ned1 to 768000 or 58 ? If you set it to 768000 I think it will work.

Prebenkvist, I tried for Ned1 768000. I also tried 76800 and 7680 and 768. Non of it works... I runned mythfilldatabase again and now I retrieve also the program information with the on screen information, inclusive the icons of the television station.
But still I'm not able to watch TV, but only black screen with snow (and some program information ). Could it be that I have to update my driver or something? Maybe I say something stupid, but I'm just a newbie... If this could fix the problem, could someone please tell me how to this?
Awaiting for your help....

It might be worthwhile using the channel number.
In mythtv-setup, in General, on the Global backend setup screen, what have you set the TV format, VBI format and channel frequency table?

Bruce,
You are briljant! I have TV now. But it is not perfect yet. I found out that only one tuner is active (I have conflicts if I try to schedule two programs at the same time), but with a PVR-500 it should be possible.
Also the quality of the screen is not that perfect. And the last thing... the tv sometimes shocks, but I do nothing else with that machine. I believe (I have let it checked by some on this forum) that my hardware should be sufficient...
It is quite late now in the Netherlands, so I will digg into logfiles tomorrow. But if you guys have some tips where to look for, then that would help.
Thank you all for your great tips and time. I'm getting bit by bit more closer to a great media center (have some other issues, but watching tv was my primary thing to start with ).
Edit: Both tuners are working now, but still the quality is not so good. Try to finetune tonight.
