Maybe what I want to do is crazy, but hopefully somebody here can clue me in.

I have a working .20 backend/frontend installed on Gentoo, and another frontend box running on Gentoo. What I want to be able to do, is create some more frontend boxes without hard drives. I have a D-link router, and don't want to set my server up to be a router. I have quite a few old computers that would make nice frontends for a couple of the TVs in my house, but they don't have hard drives.

I want to setup a knoppmyth ISO file with my own "default" settings. When it boots, it would automatically choose "Frontend" mode, use my backend's IP, mysql settings, etc, and boot straight to the frontend screen. This way if anything happens, my wife can just hit reboot and not have to think about setting it up each time. I could also shut them down when not in use. All the advantages of a frontend, without the pain of setting up boot over network stuff...

Is this possible? If so, where would I start looking to find out how to edit the KnoppMyth ISO file?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, it is possible. You want to remaster. the process is the same as remastering Knoppix. Sorry, I won't give you step by step details as plenty of documentation on remastering Knoppix is available on the Internet. you'll want to have mysql.txt in /home/knoppix/.mythtv and start in run level 5 instead of 3.

Ah, "Remaster" is what I needed. I'm finding much more useful information on the intrawebs now. Thanks for the help!

You might take a look at http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... ssFrontend It would save re-burning a CD every time you want to make a tweek.

It describes using the backend as a dhcp server. It should be possible to use your d-link router to send the necessary network boot cmds to NFS mount the backend and boot.
