Post subject: | R5E50 Separate video modes for GUI and TV playback |
Hi all, Manually upgraded to R5E50 the other day and I've found that since the upgrade my monitor does not change modes based on the content being played since I made the jump. Anyone else have issues with this? My settings are: Code: Utilities/Setup --> Setup --> Appearance --> Separate video modes for GUI and TV playback screen. GUI: 1920x1080 Video: 1920x1080 Rate: Any Aspect: Default Specific Overrides...: Input video: 1280x720 Output: 1280x720 Rate: 60Hz Aspect: 16:9 Input video: 720x480 Output: 800x600 Rate: 60Hz Aspect: Default These are the same settings I had in R5D1 and it worked beautifully then... I did upgrade my NVIDIA driver to 1.0-9746 with these instructions and added the Code: Option "UseEvents" "True" to my devices section of xorg.conf. As a result I can watch HDTV without XvMC on for the first time ever! ![]() |

In the course of the upgrade you changed from the XFree86 server to the xorg server, and probably got a new xorg.conf file in the bargain. This is covered in the upgrade hints, along with some tips for what to copy from your old XF86Config-4 file. |

I understand there was a switch to Xorg and yes, I did get a new xorg.conf in the upgrade. I followed your upgrade instructions. I did not simply copy my old XF86Config-4 over. I lifted the following from XFree86Config-4: Code: Section "Device"

mihanson, you are not crazy... I am having the same issue. The odd thing is that as I have been trying to debug this I have found some strange issues compared to R5D1 (I upgraded from there). For some reason the modelines called from the system are not the personal modelines defined in xorg.conf (check your xorg log file to see what modeline is actually being used - on my systems it is not my defined modeline - it is a default). Here is my Monitor section... That mode (640x480_0_0) is the modeline called when the system switches modes as defined in the separate video mode setting - I do not think it is calling the correct modeline. The odd thing is that after MUCH playing around I got it working (don't know exactly how yet) but lost it on a reboot. I do know that the generated xorg.conf (if you request it in the upgrade script) as a result of the nVidia upgrade (http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13550) seems to produce some other strange behaviors versus the one in the KnoppMyth build. Again, I haven't tracked that down yet either... |

There is an option you can use to disable the builtin modes but I can never remember its name... The other thing you can do is change the name of the modes you want it to use slightly, e.g. prefix it with "my" in both the Monitor and Screen sections since the names are matched as strings this should be enough to force the use of the ones you want. In Section "Monitor": Code: Modeline "my_640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525 #60Hz In Section "Screen": Code: Modes "my_640x480"

Thanks tjc. My modelines are all named to a unique name and under prior releases that always worked. I am trying to find that option to disable the builtin modelines. I have been testing this issue for several days and have discovered some things that lead me to believe we have an issue with the way this version calls the modelines from the "seperate video mode" screen... My build (almost vanilla out of the box) does not change modes automatically. I have found a way to force it to work but then it only uses the built in modelines. I have built 3 different boxes 3 different ways all with the same result. |

Hmmm... http://xorg.freedesktop.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/xorg.conf.5.html Quote: The Identifier entry specifies the unique name for this monitor. The Monitor section provides information about the specifications of the monitor, monitor-specific Options, and information about the video modes to use with the monitor. Specifying video modes is optional because the server now has a built-in list of VESA standard modes. When modes are specified explicitly in the Monitor section (with the Modes, ModeLine, or UseModes keywords), built-in modes with the same names are not included. Built-in modes with different names are, however, still implicitly included.
So maybe you need to mask the builtin names with you custom ones... Wish I could remember that option name... Maybe it's in the nVidia driver docs... Possibly a command line option? |

I think this is the section form the NVIDIA driver that tjc is referring to... Quote: Option "ModeValidation" "string"
This option provides fine-grained control over each stage of the mode validation pipeline, disabling individual mode validation checks. This option should only very rarely be used. The option string is a semicolon-separated list of comma-separated lists of mode validation arguments. Each list of mode validation arguments can optionally be prepended with a display device name. "<dpy-0>: <tok>, <tok>; <dpy-1>: <tok>, <tok>, <tok>; ..." Possible arguments: ... <snip> "NoVesaModes": when constructing the mode pool for a display device, the X driver uses a built-in list of VESA modes as one of the mode sources; this argument disables use of these built-in VESA modes. * "NoEdidModes": when constructing the mode pool for a display device, the X driver uses any modes listed in the display device's EDID as one of the mode sources; this argument disables use of EDID-specified modes. * "NoXServerModes": when constructing the mode pool for a display device, the X driver uses the built-in modes provided by the core XFree86/Xorg X server as one of the mode sources; this argument disables use of these modes. Note that this argument does not disable custom ModeLines specified in the X config file; see the "NoCustomModes" argument for that. * "NoCustomModes": when constructing the mode pool for a display device, the X driver uses custom ModeLines specified in the X config file (through the "Mode" or "ModeLine" entries in the Monitor Section) as one of the mode sources; this argument disables use of these modes. * "NoPredefinedModes": when constructing the mode pool for a display device, the X driver uses additional modes predefined by the NVIDIA X driver; this argument disables use of these modes. * "NoUserModes": additional modes can be added to the mode pool dynamically, using the NV-CONTROL X extension; this argument prohibits user-specified modes via the NV-CONTROL X extension. Examples: Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck" disable the maximum pixel clock check when validating modes on all display devices. Option "ModeValidation" "CRT-0: NoEdidModes, NoMaxPClkCheck; DFP-0: NoVesaModes" do not use EDID modes and do not perform the maximum pixel clock check on CRT-0, and do not use VESA modes on DFP-0. The Super Bowl is about to kick off, so I'll try to fiddle with this later. |

In fact, something odd is afoot. My "ATSC-1080-59.94i" modeline is being validated in Xorg.0.log, as evidenced by these lines: Code: (--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce 6200 at PCI:1:0:0: and (--) NVIDIA(0): WDE LVM-37w1 (DFP-0) (--) NVIDIA(0): WDE LVM-37w1 (DFP-0): 155.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (--) NVIDIA(0): WDE LVM-37w1 (DFP-0): Internal Single Link TMDS (II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Validation Overrides for WDE LVM-37w1 (DFP-0): (II) NVIDIA(0): NoVesaModes (II) NVIDIA(0): NoXServerModes (II) NVIDIA(0): NoPredefinedModes (II) NVIDIA(0): NoUserModes (II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: DFP-0 (II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes: (II) NVIDIA(0): "ATSC-1080-59.94i" (II) NVIDIA(0): "ATSC-720-60p" (II) NVIDIA(0): "1280x720" (II) NVIDIA(0): "800x600" (II) NVIDIA(0): "640x480" (II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1920 x 1080 Code: (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "ATSC-1080-59.94i" However, at the very last lines of my Xorg.0.log, I see this:(II) Loading extension NV-GLX (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized Code: (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "USB Mouse" (type: MOUSE) (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Keyboard0" (type: KEYBOARD) xkb_keycodes { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)" }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compatibility { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc(pc105)+us" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc105)" }; (II) USB Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "nvidia-auto-select" "nvidia-auto-select" no longer is defined in my "Screen" section, but for some reason, I end up with it at the end. ![]() Code: # startx - --logverbose 6 will produce in the logs, but I have not figured out how to do that with the new version of X yet. (pkill xinit restarts it, but I need to figure out how to stop it all together and be able to restart it with the above command. Dropping to single user mode does not work.) Also, what's "DRI" for? I recall having that commented out or all toghter deleted from my old XF86Config-4 file... The only info I can find is in my xorg.conf file where it says Quote: Load "dri" # This shouldn't be available choice if user has selected driver vga, vesa or nv. I'm not using those drivers, so I guess it's ok to be there?

nbdwt73, I just reread your post and I now realize I basicly just confirmed that the modeline call is not being handled properly. FWIW, I did not allow NVIDIA to update my xorg.conf file when I upgraded my driver to 1.0-9746. |

Well, I sort of have "success." nbdwt73, your options did not seem to do it for me. However, I can get MythTV thinking it's changing modes properly, but my monitor is still reporting only 1920x1080 for everything...With the exception of SDTV thru my DISH Network STB. My modes WILL change to 800x600@60 for that. It's just the ATSC HDTV material that is only displayed at 1080. They were odd numbers like 56Hz on 800x600 playback. That option seems to have taken care of that as I now get 800x600 at 60Hz. I do not know where it's getting 100 x 100 dpi from though...My .xsession-errors log file in mythtv's home directory is reporting a lot of lines like this: Code: 2007-02-05 21:08:48.206 TV: Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV

I'll keep trying. FWIW, I'm not using XvMC. |

Mike, I notice that you are not using all of the options I listed. I didn't have complete success until trying all the options listed (including the Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "true"). Did you have problems with them? |

I just tried your options, verbatim, but I could not get a picture (Signal out of range). I'll fiddle a bit and see if some combination works. I noticed you're using a FX5200. I'm using a 6200. In my expereince that makes a difference in options required. I was never able to get 1080i output with my FX5200, so I upgraded to a 6200. I had to mess with my options in order to get a good picture back then. I noticed that you seem to be using the CRT output of your NVIDIA card/input to your monitor. If that's true, I don't see why you'd need the DVI specific options. Have your tried without those DVI options? Specificly, I'm referring to Quote: Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" and Quote: NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck
In the meantime, I want to share this post from the MythTV mailing list regarding the 9xxx series NVIDIA drivers. Seems that it takes some trial-and-error to get modes working properly. I found that if you add the option Code: -logverbose 6 to line 26 of Code: /usr/bin/startx between the quotes so it looks like this Code: serverargs="-logverbose 6" . You'll get a much more detailed Xorg.0.log file that tells you why a mode is failing.
