very basic KnoppMyth questions

Post subject:  very basic KnoppMyth questions
hope this will be tolerated:

tried to install KnoppMyth on a Pii 333 Mhz with a PVR 250 and a *not working* 3Com NIC.

do i need a working networkcard and a working internet connection to install the KM backend?

do i have the KM functionality from the machine with the backend on it, or do i have to run the KM CD on this same machine or on another in the (working) network as a frontend and work from the frontend?

For one I don't think a PII-333 will have enough power to playback your video without dropping frames but I could be wrong. Best thing to do is try it out. Secondly, you will need a working NIC to fetch your TV listing data from zap2it, xfer files from machine to machine, manage your mythtv machine (via ssh), use mythweb from other machine, etc. so get yourself a working NIC.

No, the backend is fully functional as is. You can run a frontend off the CD from another PC on your network (but your NIC isn't working so this obviously won't work).

I recommend that you read the relevant sections of the mythtv docs because once you get your backend working, you will have many more questions. Here are some good resources:

Actually the machine is a Celeron 333 with 256 Mb; that it is *unable* to playback video without dropped frames, i did find out by simply playing a svcd recording from cd on the cd-drive i mounted in it.
But my first aim was to record to the harddisk, after that pulling it over to another machine to burn video on cd/dvd there.. (i know, won't go without NIC).
There seem to be hardware problems with the computer i wanted to use (this machine above) though, as the known-good NIC is'nt working in this setting, and i am unsure if the PVR 250 is recognised, though KnoppMyth lists it in its setup.
The computer is a Compaq Deskpro SB; it seems to have a very 'special' bios with very few possiblities.

## thanks for your pointing to this.

my problem is i made a choice for 'thin ethernet' long ago, so my networkcards need to have the bnc connector.
available new are rj45 connector cards only.

so i'm in need of 'old fashion' (3com) cards, only available 2nd hand (in NL netherlands)), or a hub with rj45 and bnc (which is a bit out of my budget (yes, i know!) new).

the 3com bnc card i had available (not in a machine) seems to be partially defective and is not seen (may be while this defect exists) by the compaq machine.

## have done this, but i cannot find the pointer in this listing,
but in the listing i get when i do dmegs|more, i see Hauppauge listed.
got this output as a text file, but don't know if i can/may add this here..

sounds like an isa card and not sure if there is much support in the newer versions. I ran into that with audio :( You might try R5C7 to see if it might support it yet.

Try dmesg | less and scroll through to check if the nic was discovered first. Then run netcardconfig as root to try and set up your nic.

A 333mhz should be able to work as a recorder as the 250 has the encoder. It might even play if you had a 350 card which has a decoder for tv out. I use R5C7 on a 400 mhz Dell GX1 to play & record on a 350 with no problem, menus are a little slow, can't do eye candy with the mythmusic, but other wise it runs well.
