trying compile to use a vanilla kernel (2.6.20) with bootsplash and suspend2 patches. Kernel compiles ok, but the default now is for an initramfs image to be generated instead of the old initrd style. It would seem that the 2.6.18 with R5E50 still uses the old initrd.

I've tried modifying the config file in kernel-img.conf or kernel-pkg.conf (forget which it is) to force it to use mkinitrd instead. But it wouldn't build the initrd image.

The problem is that initramfs seems incompatible with the R5E50 boot scripts. Udev doesn't start and other problems. The initramfs config could probably be modified to work, but I think it'd less work to build the old initrd format if I knew how it was done for R5E50.

How does one build the initrd for R5E50?
