Post subject:  can't play uploaded videos in media library -> watch vide

Hi I just installed RE50

I uploaded an xvid I downloaded from the web, into /myth/video via sshftp

I can see the file in the video browser, but when I click play it says "loading" then just goes back to the file view. It also shows zero length. The file is an Xvid avi

Do I need to load a codec or do anything else?

thanks!

Yes, you need a codec. From the R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards posting, under "Known Changes":

6) Cecil has taken a more conservative approach on codecs in recent releases. Search for the various mplayer "how to" postings for details on installing extra codecs for mplayer.

hmm when I run mplayer -vc help it shows

xvid xvid working XviD (MPEG-4) [libxvidcore.a]

I did try to reinstall the latest xvid package aswell, but still nothing

I also uploaded a .mpg file from my windows PC, and that does play, although the length is still shown as 0, with no preview

Is there any other way to check what may or may not be happening?
thanks!

See the bit here about essential codecs: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4706&highlight=mplayer+codec

I can't find anything pertaining to mplayer at all in the logs in /var/log

I changed the default player to have > /tmp/mplayer.log at the end, to dump some info

it shows this:
Quote:
MPlayer 1.0rc1-4.1.2 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz (Family: 15, Model: 1, Stepping: 2)
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.

Playing /myth/video/filename.avi.
AVI file format detected.
VIDEO: [XVID] 544x304 12bpp 23.976 fps 481.6 kbps (58.8 kbyte/s)
Clip info:
Software: VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.1 (build 2366/release)

Exiting... (End of file)

So it looks like it can read the file, but it just exits right away without playing it for some reason. I've tried a few different avi files, all with the same results

I'll keep hacking away at it for now I guess. Any posts with some brilliant insight would be appreciated :)

so I tried playing the file outside of myth, in a terminal using the same command string as the default player was set to (avi was set to use default player, mpg was using internal)

it gave me an error about using xv and suggested x11, so I changed the default player command to the following:

mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo x11 %s

video plays fine now, but no sound out on my pvr-350, a little bit of sound is coming out of my onboard sound card. I did see some threads about picture with no sound, so I'll look into that

#mythtv on irc.freenode.net gave me the idea to try playing in mplayer outside of myth, thx
