What if future KnoppMyth releases were DVD image files rather than CD image files, would you be able to burn the DVD images to a DVD-R or DVD+R disc?

Interesting as the last few KM releases has been smaller then the last... so this question is exciting. I can do DVD-r from my myth box, but not from my winboxen.

I could burn a dvd from either myth or the other guy.
That would be nice however, the d/l would be murder. Best I can get is less than a megabit DSL here. Cable is not an option.
Unfortunately, all too often in the middle of a D/l something goes bump and alas there is another blown d/l that doesn't match the checksum.

Stay small, then I can get the parts I need incrementally..

I've got DSL and dropped downloads are NOT normal. You should get your DSL service provider to fix that!

I don't think it's going to be single big items, I would assume, if it is going to happen, that it's due to hitting the top limit of a single CD having to satisfy dependencies as well as keep as much functionality of a standard Linux distro, so having to leave off the kernel source and headers.
So just because it might be DVD based, it doesn't mean it's going to shoot up to 4GB.

Guess I'm in the minority. I don't have access to a DVD writer at the same location I have broadband access. I probably could chop the iso up, take it home on several CDRs, rebuild it then burn a DVD.

Personally, I think knoppmyth should remain streamlined. Apt-get is a wonderful tool. I would rather apt-get what I want rather then have a lot of stuff installed by default I don't use. I think that if knoppmyth concentrates on applications that are not out-of-the-box apt-getable, it will probably stay relatively small.

As I understand it, Cecil has run out of room and can't fit a full Knoppmyth releases on a single cd-r disc, unless he omits elements, files and code. For example, the most recent version of KnoppMyth is missing the kernel source, which makes it difficult/impossible to update simple device drivers without chasing down the kernel source and recompiling the kernel.

I would estimate that Cecil only needs an extra 100-200MB over the cd-r size limit to fit everything - not a huge increase in size, just a little over the cd-r size limit, that's all.

Keep in mind, that DVD writers are down to $35 US. If you can't afford one, how can you afford internet access????

Hi, I think a move to a DVD .iso is long overdue. I don't think the download will jump massively, (as acutely observed by neutron68 who put his finger right on the mark) it would give scope for 'developments' and ultimately more support being able to be built in. DVD discs and burners are so cheap these days...

No problem with DVD iso's.

As a Linux noob (but long time Windows user) I would prefer that more be included in the distro. I'm not afraid to use apt-get for some apps, but as I understand it, not including source has become an issue recently (i.e. how to update nvidia driver).

I'm also a big fan of using bittorrent for distribution. I've never had a full size DVD iso fail to download successfully via bittorrent. My current share ratio for R5E50 is >36 (one way I can give back).

I wouldn't have a problem with going to DVD images, but I think using apt-get for certain extras would be better.

I don't use a lot of the extra features like Motion, and I'm guessing the majority of users don't either. So I think many of these could be left out of the base system and installed via apt-get.

On the other hand some users may not have a good internet connection to their myth box and may not be able to use apt-get easily so I would suggest that anything that requires internet access to use should be a lower priority to go on the CD. If Motion doesn't require internet access then it could go on the CD rather than mythbrowser and mythweather that will only be used by people with a decent connection and can easily apt-get them.

Although I can make DVD-R's I'd rather the distro stay small and apt-get anything extra I feel I really need. I don't see the problem with leaving the kernel source code out as long as I can get it from somewhere.
