I'm sure this has been answered somewhere before, but I'm having trouble finding the right info...

Most of my shows are automatically transcoded to mpeg-4 + mp3 after recording (from a digital tv card). I'd like to export some of them from nuv to avi without re-transcoding video or re-converting the sound. Is this possible? How can I do it? And if it works, is it likely to work in a consumer dvd player that advertises DivX support?

Reason why I ask: Re-transcoding is very slow and visibly degrades the video quality.

Thanks!

Nobody else interested huh... Oh well.

I found something called "nuv2avi" that promises to do exactly what I need. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be actively developed anymore, and I couldn't get it to compile on my mythbox.
Code:
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/nuvtools-0.0.2/libavcodec'
gcc -O3 -g -Wall  -DHAVE_AV_CONFIG_H -I.. -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_GNU_SOURCE -c -o common.o common.c
In file included from avcodec.h:14,
                 from common.c:28:
common.h:67: error: array type has incomplete element type
common.h:71: error: array type has incomplete element type
make[1]: *** [common.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/nuvtools-0.0.2/libavcodec'
make: *** [libavcodec] Error 2

Dangit.

Anyone else know what to do? If it helps, at the moment most of the shows that I want to export are from PBS. So advertisement removal isn't very important to me yet.

nuv2avi would be the ideal exporter - however you are correct - nuvtools (nuv2avi) has stopped development.

I got a reply from the developer who basically said he didnt have time to pursue it any further.

No matter what I do, I cant get it to successfully compile on a knoppmyth box. I have been able to get it to compile after attempting to hack on the config and Makefiles and satisfy all the crazy dependencies, however the output binary always seems to crash with a floating point exception error. My programming and debugging skills are basically non-existant so I guess we will never see what could have been a GREAT utility for working with NUV video.

BTW did I mention that NUV container blows big hard donkey rods? I have a tin-foil-hat theory of why they went with the TOTALLY obscure container of Nupplevideo instead of an established, stable, functional container like say ---- Matroska (mkv) ??? --- and that theory has to do with keeping the copyright dogs of hollywood and other countries at bay

I really wish somebody would hack the crap out of myth to produce matroska containers as an option to NUV

</rant>
