Post subject:  Aspect Ratio on Widescreen TV

Hi there,

I made a similar post on the installation part of this forum but it got deleted (wrong area i guess) so ill try again here.

I have a wide screen TV plugged up to my myth box. When i view pics in my gallery people are suffering from fat head syndrome :-( I have checked my xorg.conf file and all of the modelines have 4:3 ratios. However there are so many damn modelines there i dont even know where to begin with the xorg.conf file. Any help would be gratefully appreciated as my girlfriend is constantly complaining that she looks fat in the pictures :-)

While playing back a show, press the w key. The w key will cycle you through the diffeferent aspect ratios.

In the playback setup menu you can set it to default to one.

Sounds like a plan, however does this work for viewing images in the gallery which is where i seem to be having the problem?

I'm also interested in the xorg.conf line that determines 16:9 vs 4:3 ratio.

For future reference I usually tar up the /etc and the /home/.mythtv directories and save them before I reinstall.

Saved me a ton of time!

Right finally sorted it out. Basically i had to use the following website

http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

to generate a modeline for my system. Now the problem i found was that my TV actually used a 16:10 aspect ratio even though in the manual it said it was 16:9, so modelines based upon this info were causing problems. You will also need to know the horizontal and vertical sync rate, these can helpfully be found (or they were in my case) in the monitor (or it might be the screen) section of the xorg.conf file (youll find this in /etc/X11/).

Finally to make the frontend look correct i chose a widescreen skin. Hopefully this should be helpful to someone.
