Post subject:  Transcode package question

I am trying to get the best quality file archived to a DVD. I recorded a show at 720x480 with a high quality profile. It is 2 hours long and 6.5 gigs in size.

I intended to transfer it to DVD using a HQ profile, but that increased the size to 8 gigs or so, to big for my DVD RW. I made a cut list and attempted to use the "Don't Re-encode" option, hoping that after the cuts it would be small enough.

It seems it was not, but it opened this issue. In the process it attempted to use tcrequant. I found that is part of the Transcode package, but when I do an apt-get install transcode, it says that it is not available. I have searched around, but with a generic name such as that it has made it fairly impossible to find.

If there is a better solution to my issue I am more than willing to listen.

Thanks guys/gals.

Using RE50 for this as of now.

KnoppMyth already comes with transcode.
Code:
dpkg -l | grep transcode

Code:
ii  transcode-doc                       1.0.2-0.11                                     Documentation for transcode

Is what I get, is this correct?

The main reason I thought I did not have it was due to an error when attempting to run tcrequant. I tried to look for the exact wording but I have performed another archive. I will reproduce it and post it tonight if needed.

Odd. Did you remove transcode at somepoint? Transcode has been included w/ KnoppMyth for a long time now. What does you sources.list look like? Did you apt-get update before attempting to install transcode?

Ok, well I at least feel better now because I thought I had thought this through and was beginning to doubt myself :).

I did not remove the transcode package, and I did not do an apt-get update before I attempted to apt-get install transcode.

I will look at my sources.list and let you know what it looks like.

Well life got in the way of me checking this last night. I did however manage to get the archive in an acceptable quality using a cut list it seems though. I am not sure that I will run into needing the Transcode package now really, is it used other places or just for calling tcrequant?
