For ever I have had sound using the left and right output of my Asus motherboard. On a fresh R5F1 install I installed the SPDIF plug onto the motherboard. When I connected it to my reciever I heard nothing. After doing some searching I found that ALSA:spdif" in place of "/dev/dsp" could possibly be a fix. With "ALSA:spdif" chosen as the output, and "default" as the passthrough.
Another, more difficult fix for some was to follow the directions on the link:http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15428&sid=3ccec768aca6af476c0596031379db4e

Has anyone else had a fix before I risk breaking something?

I know it's not the same as your Asus board, however I just setup R5F1 again with my MSI board and had SPDIF working within minutes.

Here's my post about it. (previous release of Knoppmyth)

It might help if you run:
Code:
# cat /proc/asound/pcm

That way we can see what your settings are...
