Post subject:  New Window Manager or MythTV machine

In a thread titled, "Surfing the web with knoppmyth," 'lostmyshape' posted the following, "knoppmyth comes with fluxbox, however you can install any other windows manager (kde, etc) over that and run it like any linux box."

How does one install another windows manager instead (or over?) of the fluxbox? I am not particular about gnome or kde but I prefer either over the fluxbox. My computer can accommodate either.

Could one install Mythtv (components plus drivers for remotes/blasters) in Knoppix, for e.g., and have it similar or nearly identical to KnoppMyth?

I have KnoppMyth installed but I want a new Window Manager and to be able to run my computer like 'any linux box' like the one poster asserted.

Btw, I find the lirc (and/or ivtv) configuration and remote/blaster configuration to be the most problematic or complicated of the (mythtv) install.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Not a recommended change if you don't already know how to do it. There is a wiki page with directions but you have to understand going in that:

1) It'll break things like automatically starting the frontend and the shortcuts for restarting it, controlling the backend, and running mythtv-setup which are done through fluxbox.

2) It will invalidate a great deal of the documentation, directions, and other support resources here in the forums and on the wiki.

3) It'll make your next upgrade quite a bit harder.

4) There is every possibility that it will drag in enough dependencies to break the KnoppMyth applications or something else like lirc.

Hi,

Just curious, but what are you trying to accomplish that is above and beyond KnoppMyth proper?
