I am experiencing some problems with my Dragon2 machine with R5F1. It appears to work properly and produces a good image on my plasma screen although not as good as the Panasonic set top box. Recently it has been freezing during playback of recordings which requires a hard reboot of the machine with the reset button. The events are quite random in frequency.
The screen has a resolution of 1024x 1024 but in order to get full coverage I had to increase the resolution in nVidia settings to 1920x1080. Any less and the image did not use the full screen. The resolution set in the xorg.conf is 1024x576 see the relevant parts of the file below

I had previously upgraded the nvidia driver to 9755. After researching the forums and wiki I looked at ~/.xsession-errors (1.7 MB!) and discovered lots of errors every time I reboot and dating back to the last install. I suspect the freezing is due to the high resolution I have set in the nvidia settings and maybe that has something to do with the errors in the .xsession-errors.
Can anybody help?

Your machine isn't a Dragon2. You're not using the tested (and certified) TV cards. If you call it a Dragon, people will assume it is one.
If you're using all the other Dragon2 components, I have to ask if your screen is 1080i. Not that this would freeze a Dragon, but it would certainly wouldn't help.
It's strange that the playback isn't as good as the STB. What are you using to connect your not-dragon to your TV? Best to use a VGA cable, if you can. Mine looks sensationally better than the built-in tuner.
Have you checked in /var/log/ for Xorg.log, messages, dmesg, mythtv/mythfrontend.log ? Your log files and google are your best debugging friend.

Mike,
My choice of TV card was on your suggestion as a "is a drop-in replacement" because the Airstar is no longer imported to Australia. I thought it was tested. I shall stop calling it a Dragon. Perhaps I should call it a goanna, the nearest thing to a dragon in Aus.
Yes the screen is capable of 1080i and is connected to the box by component cables. When I say the quality is not as good as the STB it is still very good but with some minor streakiness to the image. I have to admit that the cables I am using for the Myth box are not high quality whereas the STB does have good quality so that could be the issue.
I shall try the other logs when I get a chance. Thanks for the suggestion.

FYI the Airstar is being imported. The supplier had run out briefly when you were looking for one. I did test it, and it is pretty much a drop-in replacement in that it will work, but it's not an exact match. Goanna is a good name (though they're not mythical beasts).
Try a VGA cable. I mean it, the picture is excellent with this ordinary cable. I believe they're usually shielded, and that the signal is digital. Try using the stb cables to see if that's your problem.
Actually, the 7300 doesn't output component. How are you doing this?
Look at those logs. They will lead you to the solution.
Cheers
Mike

Mike,
The 7300GS comes with a dongle that plugs into the DIN-style plug on the card. The dongle can then send either S-video or component.
The card can also send DVI-D which I tried but unfortunately the TV can only display DVI-D input in 4:3 aspect ratio. It must assume it's coming from a normal computer. I did originally try VGA connection to get started but switched to exploring the digital transmission options.
But my main concern at the moment is the freezing so I will concentrate on that.

I think the dongle is probably a hack to get the signal out to a tv.
What did the log files say? If they're really long, provide an external link or tar, gzip, email them to me ( mike@better-access.com) and I'll have a look.
Cheers
Mike

I had updated the driver to 9755 a couple of months ago but I notice that a new version exists, 9639. However when I look at the nVidia website I see these are legacy drivers for older cards.
Since my card is new (7300GS), should I be using the latest driver (100.14.11) ?

You shouldn't need to. The 7300GS isn't a new card, even if yours is just out of the box.
Regards
Mike
