| Post subject: | R4V4 - stuttering caused by mythbackend spiking in cpu usage |
This happens about every 3-7 minutes. Before in R4V4 I noticed this happening when the backend would either end or start (or both) a program. PVR-250, Cpu 1.7GHz Celleron, dma on I never saw this with months of use on R4V2. Is anyone else seeing anything like this? |

Yes, I saw something like this within the last couple weeks on live TV. I had paused something I was watching for maybe half an hour because of a phone call and then went back to try to finish watching it. After some time the video and sound were suddenly skipping and the backend was using nearly 90% of the CPU. Pausing again or skipping forwards/backwards would smooth things out for a few seconds. I finally rebooted which cured the symptom but lost the program I was trying to watch. 8-/ |

there was some sort of stuttering issue fixed in mythtv 0.15.1 but at this point you'll have to compile it yourself to get that upgrade. |

I had seen the release actually, cesman.... I just wanted to note and verify that this was an issue, I read the list of fixes but don't remember this one. Thanks for the verification, I'll report back after the new R4V4... are you really going to release it again as V4 instead of stepping it up to V5, if so can you give us the MD5 so we can verify it, plz. thanks. |

On my first install or R4V4 I also saw the stutter problem. I assumed that Myth .15 was just larger, and perhaps a little more porcine with the resources. You know, classic version number increase, bloat increase. (Before anyone yells that such a thing would never happen with open source, it was a fleeting thought of a Windows refugee, linux nooby.) I sighed and resigned myself to buying a new processor rather than recycling an older one. In trying to fix the dreaded Dark Red video problem, I munged things nicely, and decided to start again from scratch. On that first install, I had answered Yes to the XvMC question. I really didn't know if my video card supported it, or not, but I thought I'd try it. What I'd read about it seemed to indicate it could reduce the processor burden with things like the program information overlay (or at lease that's was I thought I read). I notices that besides the every few minute stutter, an additional one happened whenever I brought up the program info (I). On the second install I said "don't install XvMC". When I viewed live TV with that fresh version, the stutter was gone. Just an random experience to share. Thought it might help some experiencing this issue. Ian |

As far as I know, nvidia's about the only video chipset that has linux drivers to use xvmc. I used to have the problem with stuttering when using EPG, but then I switched my theme to the hardwareosd one and I've not had it since. Amy |

I have nVidia driver loaded via install-nvidia what else do I have to do to enable this feature XvMC, I know there's the install-i586...lx that I need can I apply a -lx over a -l ? also do you have any additional settings in Config to make this feature work right? |

You can remove debs at will. A search of the forum should tell you all you need to do for remove or installing the various packages. |

wow I can't believe I missed an announcement like that. of course I'm still happily using 0.14 I finally got it stabilized and I think I'll leave it there for a bit. I'm afraid to go to one of the newer ones, because the wireless drivers aren't working nearly as well in the newer kernel. |
