Post subject:  R5Fx:The next release

It will be out when it is ready. I'm getting back from vacation and fighting a cold. But the testers and I are working on the next release. I'd highly encourage everyone to upgrade to the next release. Barring any unforeseen incidents, it will be the last release of R5.

When R6 is released, the subsystems will be different. There will be no resources (unless someone steps up) dedicated to testing the upgrade path from anything but R5Fx to R6. When R6 is released, upgrades will be over the network. You should be able to make it a more flexible workstation without fear of breaking the system. However, PVR will still be the core focus.

Will there be any testing of R5E50 -> R5Fx?

Cecil, thank you for the update on R5FX. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's eagerly awaiting the next release, and it's good to hear that it's still on track and being worked on.

As well, thank you *again* for your tremendous investment of time, money, and energy into this project. The flexibility and convenience that Knoppmyth brings to my life is very difficult to measure in any quantifiable way. Really all I can do is say it makes things "lots" better.

A+ to all involved in making Knoppmyth all that it can be!

No, as I'd expect it to just work. The only issue w/ auto upgrading (as I see it) as it is, is that you'll lose anything you add. Such as installing firefox for instance. Of course if ivtv (for instance) changes syntax, you may have some manual work to do. However tjc documents any gotchas before hand. Of course, I suppose one could add /var/cache/apt/archives to one's backup and restore list then simply dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives after upgrading....

This is one thing that users don't expect the first time they upgrade.

How about adding /var/cache/apt to the backup/restore scripts? This would have a check for disk space. Possibly have it run "apt-get autoclean" beforehand to get rid of superfluous debs. In summary:
0. Runs usual backup of /myth
1. Runs "apt-get autoclean"
2. Checks for available disk space for /var/cache/apt in /myth/backup
3. Runs tar -cvf /myth/backup/apt.tar /var/cache/apt (no compression: debs are already compressed so it would be a waste of cpu)

This way users get their re-useable downloads available locally that would normally be blown away by the install.

Is this a good idea? It'd be pretty trivial to write: I could write and test it this weekend.

Mike

MythTV.org just announced that 0.20.2 is out and supports Schedules Direct. Will R5Fx use this version of MythTV?

Thanks for the warning! I have been holding off installing on my new hardware until this release comes out.

This is exciting news! Thanks again

Does this mean that updates will be available via apt/dselect/aptitude for R6?

No. For the moment, lets just say apt like.

I dig that....any time frame on the next release? (very selfish question) Your releases are much better than the fixes I have in place. :) plus...my wife loves the mythstream which I can't seem to get going with the updates.

thanks
