I have used this mysettopbox forum for over a year to solve various problems. I have found that some old posts were still relevant, but many posts are for much older versions and problems solved long ago. I propose that when a dead thread is found; that user will notify one of the administrators of this site. No time frame to respond, but maybe quarterly cleanup.

I would like to ask everyone using this site to vote on this issue:
Should old, dead, unanswered or irrelevant threads be removed from the forum to improve the quality of search results.

Though most people have no doubt moved onto newer versions, I would be willing to bet money that someone out there is using R5A - likely several someones.

It's a good idea, but ultimately I'd say you'd just be taking away a resource that does indeed service a (small) piece of the community.

Also there are solutions for problems that someone may run into with a later version.

Hi,

It would be nice if the various versions could be sorted into their own corners however that would be a daunting task I suspect :)

I don't use the real "old" resources much to keep my A16 box running but I have gone back once or twice to check on some tid bit that lurked in the back of the mind. Ideas of others are sometimes invaluable.

IMO, one of the best things people could do to improve search results is stop putting lists of hardware in their sigs. Such lists cause _tons_ of useless hits when searching the forums.

I say "yes" with the caveat that if someone nominates a post or thread for deletion that they write up a summary of the salient points for inclusion on the wiki. That way, the path it took to get the old answers will be removed, but the answers themselves will not be lost. But I'm really ambivalent about it. People can just ignore search results that are older than the release they're using :)

I wouldn't remove the old stuff -- I've used some fairly old posts to help me figure out how to do things on newer releases.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. There are many folks out there running older versions. There are also many old questions that still come up, for example the classic "audio not in sync with video watching TV with a BTTV card" question, which still have the same answer.

I also think your poll question could use another answer. "No, I'd rather see people working on the next release".

A better forum search tool would help here a lot! Something that could search for exact phrases would be invaluable, but it isn't available in the current forum software.

I wonder if there would be some way to open up the forum to Google's spiders so one could search it through Google?

It used to be searchable by google, but disabled due to cpu or bandwidth problems i think.
