Hello, Everyone,

Unless I've missed it, there doesn't seem to be one of tjc's excellent howto/tips posts on moving to R5F27.

I decided to move to a new RAID setup, along with a new CPU, for my new backend.

Previously I was running R5F1 on a p4/2.4 w/512MB RAM. The drive had 3 partitions, the first being a 15GB ext3 for / , a 1GB swap partition, and the rest of the 320GB SATA drive was an XFS partition made for /myth . Worked a charm.

I used 3x new 320GB SATA drives to create a raid 1 / ext3 disk (md0) of 20GB, a raid 5 swap disk (md1) of 4GB, and a raid 5 xfs disk (md2) of the rest of the available space for /myth.

So far so good...

On the original backend setup I went to the KnoppMyth--> Backup and let it complete (apparently successfully).
I took this hd and placed it in the new motherboard, booted off the KM R5F27 CD, mounted it, and copied its /myth partition over to the mounted md2 device, which seemed to go fine.

I then powered off the machine and removed the old drive.
Booted up off the R5F27 CD and went to TV mode...
Configured timezone settings...
Selected to Manually install (no manual upgrade option)
Selected to install to /dev/md0 - all files copied just fine, no errors.

Reboot at completion, and at the desktop, prompted for the administration password.
Went to another terminal, "mkdir /myth", then "chown mythtv /myth" then entered the following in /etc/fstab :

/dev/md1 swap swap 0 0
/dev/md2 /myth xfs defaults 0 0

Rebooted, and this time it looks like the old data is now available.

Go through with the setup routine, but I don't see it ever mention anything about restoring data...

Eventually I make it to the running frontend menu and attempt to view recorded shows... none appear. aaigh.

I tried to go to the KnoppMyth menu and run the restore, but that prevents mysqld (and mythtv-backend) from ever running again.

Where did I go wrong? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Figured out I had to "chroot -hR mythtv /myth" to get the /myth partition and all its files owned by mythtv user

I tried to do this all again, this time going to a terminal and running the knoppmythrestore script as root, which seemed to take a while, but, again, it seems to kill mysql.

If I try to manually start mysqld it tells me it can't find the socket in /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

aargh.

OK, I re-did the install, this time waiting a bit after running the mythrestore script manually (prior to entering the admin password at the gui etc.).

This time it looked like it worked--there was an entry for /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.lock .

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as if the database actually got restored after all. No recorded programs showed up, again. The directories are set up correctly, I think--the new recordings are showing up in the /myth partition (linked to /dev/md2), right along with the old recordings.

Are there other things I should be checking at this point? I still have the other, original data hd--I can start over (again) and re-copy the /myth partition again...

The hardware change, at least, appears to have been worth it. Going from the P4/2.2 CPU to a P4/3.0 HT and from 512 MB to 1GB really seems to be a lot "smoother" for overall operation. That, and the raid 5 array, really seem to speed up things a good deal--enough that the wife noticed, too

No more ideas at this point?

I've set my old motherboard, cpu and original drive back up, and was able to update MythTV + weather plugins successfully in order to be able to use my new Schedules Direct account (great documentation on that, cecil!) on my RF51 installation.

Should I attempt to create a new backup, then copy the current /myth partition over to the array and try the "upgrade" again at this point?


Just to verify: I am doing this correctly--upon the 1st time bootup off the hd on the new install, I

1) verify /myth partition is correctly mounted, and mythtv user owns it
2) run the mythrestore command
3) then follow through with the rest of the install, entering admin password at the window etc.

...or am I messing up somewhere?

Hi,

Don't know about the raid stuff but am going to assume it works just like any other partition.

For the most part all looked about normal steps,
Because of the way I abuse (er use) my KM boxes, I also have to do a manual install.
What I do is the manual install, MAKE NOTE of your hostname as if it is different things don't work correctly.

When it is done, you need to manually reboot, should spit out the cd.

Go through the set up as normal, just for the practice and while doing that edit your /etc/fstab to set your /dev/___ /myth partition to be auto so it will mount on the reboot later.

once all is done, and things seem to work, you can mount your /myth partition. As root do the mythrestore. Once the restore is completed, reboot! If you don't things will sort of appear to be working but acting strange.

If the fstab was set up correctly the real myth partition should auto mount and your content return.

You can't change the /myth partition onwership, you can change the sub directories within /myth/* if needed. There are a couple ownerships that go to www-data so check your properties on the original drive.

Ah, I was doing the mythrestore, and then continuing--not rebooting first, if I remember correctly.

Let me try this out and see how it goes...

I think that, in order to save time, I'll just copy this over to a single hd and attempt the upgrade on it... if that's successful that must be where I went wrong.

OK, not sure what happened the first time, but everything seems to be OK after copying the /myth partition to a separate single drive to test the upgrade process.

I'll copy it over to the RAID array later today/tonight.
