Post subject:  DVD playback

Hi,

I've just installed knoppmyth R5F1 and have not played around with the setup much except to get the remote working. When I put a dvd in the drive it came up automatically with the dvd play screen. I clicked play and it started playing fine on xine but as soon as it hit the root menu an error displayed (which I couldn't read because it was on the tv, but I think it was along the line of error playing ...). I prefer the internal player in myth so changed the relavent dvd setup page to "Internal". Again the same happened. I found other dvds and the same occured - the only ones I could watch the film (other than the adverts) were those without a menu! I can't understand what's happening - is there something I need to do? Please help.

If they are encrypted DVDs, have you "pineapple" (the CSS decryption software) installed?

Also don't forget to set the region code of your DVD player if it isn't already set. It took me a year and a half to figure that one out.

Code:
regionset /dev/cdrom

hi, thanks for this - before I change anything please can you tell me how I would know if pineapple is installed: should I just type apt-get install pineapple or something?

Also it would still display adverts and the trailers before the root menu and the film - if pineapple wasn't installed or the region code was wrong would this still happen?

http://www.videolan.org/ search for css. There are legal issues that keep Cecil & Co. from distrbuting it.

If pineapple wasn't installed the Trailers and previews will still play as they are not encrypted and only when the DVD hits the encrypted part does it crack a wobbly.

As to installing pineapple, seek (search) and you shall find as this is something of which we do not speak.

This all depends on the player you use. Xine will play them as will MythTV's Internal player. With MythTV's internal player, you can skip them I don't know if this is the case with Xine. Mplayer will just play the movie.

Nicely said.
It sucks that this is almost a hazing ritual for people looking to play with Linux. (pun intended) I have a dvd player anyway, so I never bothered, but if Myth's internal player ignores PUOPs I might have to reconsider. (I hate forced trailers)

I urge everyone to (politely) write their senator and congressperson asking them to fix this mess.

Those outside the U.S. should either write whomever is appropriate in their gov't or post the pineapple debs on their personal website whichever is more legal.
