Post subject: | Broken PVR-250 -- what to do |
With all the fiddling with my box over the past few weeks I managed to ruin my Hauppauge PVR-250. The remote control still works, but the cable connector going in the tuner physically broke. I'm using a spare PVR-150 I had on the shelf, but this one doesn't have in input for an IR-receiver and I may need to redeploy it in the next few weeks. This means that my case currently has the following 4 tuner cards in it: 1. PVR-150 for analog input 2. PVR-250 for IR input only. (Tuner broken) 3. Airstar HD-5500 for digital input 4. Kworld-115 for digital input. I want to get back to having only 3 cards in the system -- those tuners throw off a lot of heat. Here are the choices I see: 1. Try to get the kworld-115 remote control working so I can remove the PVR-250 at some point. Has anyone succeeded in getting a kworld remote to work? 2. Purchase a new analog card that also has a remote. I hate to do this as all NTSC analog tuners will be worthless in a few years, but in case I do, I'd be interesting in hearing if people still feel the Hauppauge is still the best bet. 3. Purchase one of those serial-port IR receivers that I've seen advertised for $15 - $20 so I can remove the PVR-250, but leave the PVR-150. Along the way a little sympathy for my woos would probably be appreciated (Hummm... does that call for a ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks in advance! Marc |

I vote for option 3, but only because I have 3 of them that I have been using for ~1 year now without troubles - http://www.irblaster.info/receiver.html BTW - I'll send along an "Ooooohhh" for the sympathy ![]() |

slowtolearn, will that receiver properly interpret the IR signals sent by my hauppauge remote? Can you point me at a "how to" for setting up LIRC to work with it, or will it work with my existing configuration, which is based on the PVR-250. Thanks! marc |

I had to add marc Code: setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none to my /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh and remove the "standard" lirc startup with modprobe lirc_serial /usr/sbin/lircd Code: update-rc.d -f lirc remove

So just to be sure I've got it right, I will be able to use my existing .lircrc file as-is? Marc |

Marc Yes, that is correct. Your lirc files contain the signals from the remote, all you have to do is setup the system to receive those signals from a different point (the serial port in this case). I too had my doubts when I looked into switching over (I put my MBE into the basement so I could no longer use the PVR-350 receiver), but it was quite simple. If you go this route and run into trouble just shout. Scott |
