Post subject:  Weird backend crashing when both tuners, frontend
I am having a wierd problem with my setup (.15.1, knoppmyth backend with 2 pvr250).

If both pvr's are recording, and I am watching a previous recording on the xbox frontend, and it hits a time on a hour or half hour where the recordings need to complete, the backend crashes.

It doesn't crash if the frontend isn't watching a recording. I'm at a loss for what to do next. If there is a way to get more debug information or logging tell me how and I'll do it!

I have attached my mythbackend log, if there is something else that would help diagnose I would appreciate it!!

I dont know if this applies to you or not, but when I have commercial flagging turned on and have two tuners that just finished a recording, the backend will crash everytime when the flagging operation starts. I think there is a conflict when more than one tuner is in the box.

Try disabling commercial flagging. Like I said, it may not apply to your problem, but it worked for me.

Same problem here. With two tuners (on .14 .15 and .15.1) mythbackend sometimes crashes after two programs finish recording at the same time. With commercial flagging turned off, the problem is fixed. I'm thinking that with flagging turned on (and with two cards) there are two flagging processes going at the same time and perhaps they load the system too much.

However, I love the commercial flagging so I setup a cron job to run the commercial flagging program.

Here is what I've done:

As root: crontab -e
Added this line to the end: 10,40 * * * * /usr/bin/mythcommflag --quiet --sleep
Quit and Save ("ESC" ":" "wq")

mythcommflag checks for all unflagged files and flags them sequentially. I have this running on the 10s and 40s of the hour as I seem to have a lot of things going on at the 5s and 35s of the hour.
I'll post after a week or so to see is this fixes the stability issue.

I turned off my commercial flagging also and have not had a crash since. I just went and added the mythcommflag to the cron.daily but this is a much more elegant solution!

Thanks for that cron job suggestion, I will be trying this tonight for sure!

Perhaps this should be added to the commercial flagging options screen? I'm sure many people have had this same problem in the past.

No problem, I hope it works for you. I don't know that they would add it as an option to the mythtv UI as I think the crashing is just a bug. Perhaps not enough testing is happening with dual cards...but I don't really know.

My assumption is that the recording processes don't know about each other. And since the flagging takes a bit of CPU power, when two or more are running, they may cause some problems. I am totally guessing though as I don't know how this function really works.

By running mythcommflag, I do know that the flagging of files is happening one file at a time and perhaps the problem can be avoided this way.

I'm experiencing something similar to what's described in this thread and am going to try this solution as well..

Out of curiosity, how many backend processes do you guys normally see?

I'm seeing ~ 14 on my box and wonder if that's normal... (I see the same number of mysql processes as well)

Sounds about right, I have 13 going when I just checked
