Post subject: | Thoughts on disk usage. |
I have the following drives available to me: 160GB IDE with the OS installed. Roughly 150GB available on a partition of that disk - mounted on /myth 80GB IDE 500GB External Firewire 250GB IDE - not installed yet - probably will use for another project. I'm thinking use the remainder of the 160GB drive for Videos The 80 GB for /myth/music and the 500GB external for /myth/tv Now that I have the xvid transcode job available to me (fantastic!) I transcode my "keeper" shows to xvid and then they are stored on myth/video.. so I may not need as much storage in /myth/tv as I used to... so I'm thinking that if i need to allocate more of the space on the 500GB drive I can just use a symlink from inside /myth/videos Just bouncing my thoughts out there. Maybe someone has a better idea. |

It all depends on your needs and your usage patterns. I use a lot of /myth/tv because I like high-def shows. HD requires up to 8 GB/hour to record, so a typical football game can be 24G or more. I also like DVDs, but I don't want to transcode them -- I'd rather rip the whole ISO so I have the menus and special features. That's about 8G per movie. So I set up my myth box like this: 400G drive -- / and /myth 750G drive -- /myth/tv 750G drive -- /myth/video This will give me about 100 hours of TV programming and another 100 DVDs in my "changer". The rest I will use for MP3's, mostly, as I don't do games. On your situation, the one thing I'd caution you about is relying on an external disk for the TV recordings. I'm not sure I trust an external to be 100% reliable under all circumstances. I'd rather see that 500G internally connected. |

Ahh. HD - I did forget about that. HD is in my plans as soon as I buy a capable tuner. I've already tried some movies in HD and they look fantastic. through the DVI out to HDMI in. |
