I recently upgraded from a previous version of KnoppMyth (MythTV v0.18, not sure of the KnoppMyth version) to KnoppMyth R5F27. No hardware changes. I've been using a PVR-350 to display the user interface and the recorded video with the old machine for a couple years. After the installation completed the Myth frontend came up on my TV like I expected, the IR remote worked, it all looked great. I stopped the front and backends, ran mythtv-setup to configure Schedules Direct and my channels, then rebooted. This is when my problems began. The TV now remained blank and on the console I saw a message something like "c7: respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes". There was also a message saying that it could not open /dev/fb1. I spent a lot of time tweaking the xorg.conf file (really xorg.conf.pvr350) changing the device to /dev/fb0, /dev/fb1, /dev/fb2, etc. I've been searching the Internet looking for a similar problem but to no avail. So I did the upgrade all over again. Once again, the upgrade went fine. The frontend came u and, I was able to view previously recorded videos. This time though, I just rebooted the machine to see what would happen. Once again, it failed to display the frontend on the TV with the same respawning message. It looked like maybe ivtvfb wasn't starting, so I did an lsmod | grep ivtv, and sure enough, ivtvfb wasn't loaded. I did a modprobe ivtvfb and, after a few error messages (something about "could not open /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtvfb"), the console text was displayed on the TV. This looked like progress. However, when I typed startx, I again got the error message that it couldn't open /dev/fb1. So, why does the TV-out work immediately after the upgrade but stops working after a reboot? My uneducated guess is that the installer manually loads the ivtv stuff during the install, but the system is configured slightly differently and the ivtv files are loaded incorrectly at the next boot. I'm really not much of a Linux person so I'm not quite sure where to go from here. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks, Gary |

Thanks! All the answers I was looking for in one spot. In my case there were two problems, one was that I had to change "ivtv-fb" to "ivtvfb" in the /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv file, the other, as you suspected, was that the fbdev line in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file needed to be changed from "/dev/fb1" to "/dev/fb0".
