Hi,

I'm trying to install R5F27 on to a CF card based machine. The box doesn't like the lilo bootloader (even though the CF card appears as an IDE hard drive).

I know grub works as I've used Ubuntu on many other boxes. Is it possible with R5F27 to use grub as a boot loader?

I've tried the various docs on here but I can't seem to find the actual install files to put in place for grub. Are they on the latest CD or?

All help appreciated.

Thanks!

-J

Yes, its possible, but we don't use grub.
When I installed to a flash disk, I used syslinux as the 'booter'
and just set it up to boot without a prompt.

Hi,
grub loader works fine with KM, I multi-boot KM, Ubuntu & M$,and use it all the time (my primary reason for manual upgrades :) ) Once you have your loader installed, besure to not over write it with the KM install. (check box install to partition)

Will the CF handle all the write cycles? I was under the impression that there is limited write cycles.

Thanks
Mike

Yep, as far as I know this is still the case. Flash memory is not designed to handle the number of writes required to handle a full-blown installation like KnoppMyth for an extended period of time.

I'm using it for a very specific function. It wont' be under heavy writes.

Is there any info available on how to use syslinux as the bootloader?

Any/All logging will subject the flash drive to many writes. If your FE performs as you expected it to over the course of a number of months I (and others) would be interested to read about the specifics of your hardware. Do keep us posted...

I would guess the best resource would be their website: http://syslinux.zytor.com/

Hi,

Not knowing what the project is, maybe DSL would be the way to go. Debian based and very slick :) runs off usb, cf, just about anything that has storage. That works off cf as a read only for booting and for data storage.

mjl wanted to know if the flash would handle the writes. I got arund this by making the installed fs into a cloop image like the KnoppMyth install iso. It also boots off of flash faster from the compressed image than from an uncompressed one.

On the documentation for syslinux, its on the syslnux site: http://syslinux.zytor.com/ (Google is your friend).
