Post subject: | Transfer Frontend |
I am looking for a way to get my mythfrontend to display on (and be fully functional) on a tv in another part of my house. I run hdtv video, so the an xbox is out of the question for a frontend. I am looking for a quick and easy solution (like an xbox), Can I get a slingbox to do this? Is there any other off-the-shelf units that I can modify to get this done? Thanks. |

Why not build your own frontend box that boots and runs off the CD or DVD drive? Knoppmyth already is set up to boot to a usuable "front end only" using the Knoppmyth disk. I was able to do that sucessfully using a laptop. A mATX motherboard with on-board video would be perfect for the application. All you would need is a case, CPU, memory, and a optical drive. Also you could do a diskless frontend with the directions here: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... ssFrontend |

I just want a single unit that I can go pickup, do some software modifications, and have it work (similar to a modded xbox) |

Knoppmyth has uPnP support so any slingbox or media extender that supports HDTV and Mpeg-2 should work. Just make sure your home router supports uPnP as well and enable it. I believe a Xbox 360 is able to view and playback HDTV videos via uPnP over the network. |

From what I understand about slingbox, I would need to plug video and audio output from my existing myth system directly into the slingbox. From there, I could only access the myth from a computer, not my other TV. What I would like to find is something that goes like this Mythtv connected to router Slingbox/ media extender connected to same router, and TV That way, all the data would be going through my home network, and I would only have an additional box connected to the tv I am trying to get my mythfrontend on, as opposed to having this box connected directly to the mythtv backend via video and audio connections. |

After reading up on the internet, the only purpose of the slingbox is to route your media to another computer. So you will not need it. I originally thought it could be used as media extender but I think I was wrong. There are HDTV media extenders but it seems like playback is hit or miss(Looking at ratings on Newegg). http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... ia-Players Have you considered getting a barebones PC? Here are some examples here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... -Computers |

Those HDTV extenders are exactly what I am looking for. But it looks like what you said is true, they are unreliable. I guess I might have to wait until a more reliable unit comes out. I just wanted to stay away from the whole building a computer thing because it always ends up costing more then I wanted it to. |

Someplace is selling the D-link DSM-520 for $150, check on fatwallet. Google for more info, but they'll do playback at least. Maybe check ebay for a used desktop and video card. |
