This worked fine on R5F1 with my nvidia card to my TV without flickering (on an svideo cable). After upgrading to R5F27, I get lots of flickering.. This is really noticable if I go to setup - appearance.

I have copied over xorg.conf.nvidia.tv.out.sample to xorg.conf and tried tweaking it, even with nvidia-setting (playing with overscan and flicker)

Does anyone have any ideas that I can try?

I always restrict my modes to 640x480 and apply tweaks using nvidia-settings. The PictureQualityIssues page on the wiki has details.

Actually, I don't notice the lines flickering as much while watching a show. It's mostly in the Mythtv menu sections. The boxes that surround the options are showing it the most. I have tried changing themese and objects and it's still flickers.

I can't recommend experimenting with nvidia-settings strongly enough. Please just try it. It's provided by the maker of your video cards chipset specifically for display tuning.

I'm seeing what appears to be the same issue after upgrading from R5F1 to R5F27, GeForce4 MX 420 in a Dell Dimension 8250 going s-video out to my television. It looks like the TV Out display (especially on fonts or diagonal lines) is jagged and not antialiased and thus flickers. Watching shows doesn't look quite as bad as the desktop or the Myth menus, but it's definitely still there. I've tried all the options in nvidia-settings, but nothing seemed to help.

I compared my current xorg.conf to my old one that was backed up and they're identical. So it's apparently something else that's changed. If I had to guess, I'd say that it might be scaling an actual resolution of 640x480 to a virtual one of 800x600,and hence the pixelation/aliasing? But how would I go about fixing that? Anybody have any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

I'm guessing it's the driver for these older Nvidia cards. I know there is a different Nvida version (than the latest) when I went to their website and tried a manual install. I hope to get some time this weekend to try and figure this out.

Can anyone else with this problem verify whether their console fonts are messed up too?

I have found that the fonts in the text console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) are bad in addition to the graphics mode myth menu's bad looking fonts / flickering lines / pixelated diagonal lines (stairstepped, jagged).

I am running a GeForce MX-440 for TV out too.

The fact that there is a problem with the text console fonts makes it seem that this is not related to X, nvidia-settings, xorg.conf, etc. My console fonts are fine until it says

I get the same stairsteps on diagonal lines in videos recorded in both R5F1 and R5F27 too. They were not noticable when played back on R5F1. All of these problems started when I upgraded from R5F1 to R5F27.

You guys might want to look at the log

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

This will provide you will a list of validated modes and the virtual screen size.

That should give you some indication what the driver is detecting.

When I switched to other consoles, the fonts didn't look too bad. I guess it depends on the definition.

I just ran the mkfontdir and made the resolution to 640x480... Notice the last line. It STILL doesn't like the ttf's.:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/truetype, removing from list!

On some quick searches, it says it was fixed in Debians X server several months ago. SHould I apt-get some of the latest bits? I want to stay on the Knoppmyth provided bits until I find a fix or work around.

I was having a similar issue with an MX4000 card. I attempted to uninstall and reinstall the NVIDIA driver as suggested on the Wiki and it failed on the compile because it said the driver did not support my MX4000.

I replaced my video card with an FX5500, did a reinstall, and this solved the issue.

I would be interested to know if this was with all MX4000 cards....

I hacked the R5F1 drivers into R5F27 and my font / flicker / jaggie problems went away.
