Post subject:  added HD-5500 card - sound gone, ALSAMIXER won't run

I've had a system with a pcHDTV HD-3000 card for about 18 months. It has been fine. I'm still running R5F1, by the way.

Today, I backed up my system and added a pcHDTV HD-5500 card, configured the card in the Mythtv Setup screen and the sound stopped working on both recorded shows AND live tv. ALSAMIXER would not even run. It used to! Also, when watching Live TV without sound, only the HD-5500 card was accessable. I tried to switch cards using the "C" key but it did not switch.

When I added the HD-5500 card (DVB 1), I named it HD-5500 so I could tell which card I was using to watch Live TV. Note, I did NOT delete the HD-3000 card (DVB 0) from the Mythtv setup. After I got the no-sound problem, I stopped the backend and went back to the Mythtv setup and deleted both cards and then readded them. It didn't help - still no sound, no ALSAMIXER and only access to the HD-5500 card.

= TRIED EXPERIMENT =

I just pulled out the HD-5500 card, deleted all the cards in Mythtv setup and re-added the HD-3000 card. Sound is back on Live TV and playback of recordings. ALSAMIXER runs just fine again.

What is going on? Is this common? Do the HD-3000 card and the HD-5500 card fight each other in the same system?

Eric

There's an old issue with them being mistaken for a sound card and the system choosing it over the "right" one. Search for "black list" although there's a better solution in the threads that should lead you to.

Post subject:  not solved in R5F1??

Oh. I didn't realize this problem still existed in R5F1. I do see this problem listed in the R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards thread, but it is not in R5F1 Upgrade hints and hazards thread.

I found this advice from 4-1-07:
Quote:
in /etc/modutils/alsa-base, at the end of the file you will see a comment- "# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0" with a few entires.
On a new line below those entries, add options cx88-alsa index=-2
I just checked my alsa-base file and it already has that entry. So, I guess that fix doesn't work.

Your (tjc) R5E50 advice (12-26-06) was to:
Code:
echo "blacklist  cx88_alsa" >>/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
reboot

I have been searching for cx88 and HD-5500 and reading that udev will not always assign the same video0 or video1 number to a tuner card on every boot! Is the better fix to this cx88 problem to assign a permanent udev device number to each of the hdtv tuner cards?

tjc, is this your preferred fix nowadays?

Search for that cx88_alsa/cx88-alsa thing. There have been some other ALSA configuration tweaks related to that, however, I don't remember the details.

I've been searching for the cx88-alsa/cx88_alsa fix info and the blacklist method is the only one I read about that works.

My R5F1 system has a /lib/modules/2.6.18-chw-13/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88-alsa.ko
file but does not have a cx88_alsa file so it appears that "blacklist cx88-alsa" is the needed line to add to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Module names don't always match the file names. Check using lsmod to see what the system thinks it is.

There have been a number of discussions related to these cards and how to straighten out the alsa issues, including ones that go beyond the blacklist and index approaches. You may find that "HD5000" or "HD5500" along with "alsa" are better search terms...

Post subject:  how solved for R5F27 and beyond

tjc, I'll have to put the HD-5500 back into my system and do the lsmod as you suggest. Right now, that 5500 card is out so the R5F1 system can function normally.

I've put that HD-5500 card into a twin test computer and loaded a clean install of R5F27 on it. There was no problem with sound, ALSAMIXER, etc.
I'm curious what method was used to solve this cx88 problem in R5F27 (and into the future)?

:?: Was it the addition of this line at the end of etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
Code:
options cx88-alsa index=-2,-2,-2,-2,-2 enable=0,0,0,0,0
