Post subject: | cannot connect to local mysql server through socket.... |
This started out of nowhere recently after 4 months of flawless activity. I left the Mythbox running for quite some time one weekend, and it did a hard lock. So i rebooted it and during reboot, it notifies me that the /etc/mysql/my.cnf volume was full (1st problem) and when I go to manually start up the MySQL server it tells me it cannot connect to the local mysql server through socket blah blah blah (2nd problem) Clearly, the problem here is, after checking the remaining space on the volume that the database is on, I see that the database has gotten so huge that it completely filled the volume 100%. Now the big question is how do I clear this space out? I am a complete noob in terms of MySQL maintenance, so I wouldn't even know where to start and second of all, why won't it let me start the MySQL server so I can try to figure out how to shrink the database anyways? I am stuck here. |

This is a shot in the dark, but do you have a large sql log hogging up all the room in your /var/log/mysql folder? I know a while back I forgot to exit out of 'Watch TV' and so it was tuned into programming for like 3 days straight. One of my Mythfrontend logs was ENORMOUS and filled my remaining / partition. Typically those rotate out day by day, but since the box wasn't starting, they weren't rotating. Out of sheer desperation I deleted the largest log file and lo and behold, I was able to get back in. Not saying that's the solution, but it worked for me. |

That was what I thought, and I went there to find out..I deleted a 29MB file, but that was the largest log file I could find...I did exactly what you did too and left it set to "Watch TV" for a few days, thus causing the lockup. EDIT: Another clue. I managed to delete a few files in the /var/log folder and now have the MySQL server running. I only cleared about 2MB of memory to do it, but when I checked the size of the mythconverg and mysql database, the total was no more than 60MB or so. Where is all my hard drive space going? (BTW, I am doing this entirely remotely from work so keep that in mind) EDIT EDIT: Got even further. Found a 2.8GB X log file in my /home directory that I removed (good idea? don't know) and now I get this error when X starts.. xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4769 X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0 Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key giving up. xinit: unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. I removed the /tmp/.X0-lock file and restarted the server again, but it gave me the same error..Now I am not quite sure where to go....anyone know? |
