Hi,
I was working in another country for 5 months, in this period a friend of me borrowed my knoppmyth mediacenter (and he loved it ). Unfornutality, it is not working anymore...
The first problem was that knoppmyth didn't found the PVR500 card. I checked the hardware, and now it is working again (properly something went wrong during the transport).
But now the Watch TV functionality is not working. If I start the Watch TV function, I only see a quick black splash and then I come back to the menu again. Below the content of my backend.log file in the myth directory:
Code: root@mythtv:/myth# cat backend.log 2007-01-26 19:58:11.827 Using runtime prefix = /usr 2007-01-26 19:58:11.848 New DB connection, total: 1 2007-01-26 19:58:11.853 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.857 Current Schema Version: 1160 2007-01-26 19:58:11.861 New DB connection, total: 2 2007-01-26 19:58:11.861 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.862 EITHelper: localtime offset 1:00:00 2007-01-26 19:58:11.864 TVRec(1) Error: Start channel from DB is empty, setting to '1' instead. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.865 New DB connection, total: 3 2007-01-26 19:58:11.866 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.871 Channel::GetCurrentChannelNum(768): Failed to find Chann el '768' 2007-01-26 19:58:11.871 Channel(/dev/video0)::TuneTo(768): Error, failed to find channel. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 Channel::GetCurrentChannelNum(768): Failed to find Chann el '768' 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 Channel(/dev/video0)::TuneTo(768): Error, failed to find channel. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 TVRec(1) Error: Setting start channel '1' failed, and backup '1' failed as well. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.875 EITHelper: localtime offset 1:00:00 2007-01-26 19:58:11.876 TVRec(2) Error: Problem finding starting channel, settin g to default of '3'. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.876 ChannelBase(2) Error: InitializeInputs(): Could not get inputs for the capturecard. I don't know what is going wrong. I don't have much linux experience, this mediabox was my first linux experience.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Victor

Remove and re-install all of your tuners and Input connections in mythtv-setup. One (or more) of those is missing in your setup.

Ok, I tried many things but still WatchTV function is not working. When I click on this function in the menu, I get a black screen for one second and comes back in the menu after this.
I fixed some errors and now I have only the following error:
Code: 2007-01-26 19:58:11.827 Using runtime prefix = /usr 2007-01-26 19:58:11.848 New DB connection, total: 1 2007-01-26 19:58:11.853 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.857 Current Schema Version: 1160 2007-01-26 19:58:11.861 New DB connection, total: 2 2007-01-26 19:58:11.861 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.862 EITHelper: localtime offset 1:00:00 2007-01-26 19:58:11.864 TVRec(1) Error: Start channel from DB is empty, setting to '1' instead. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.865 New DB connection, total: 3 2007-01-26 19:58:11.866 Connected to database 'mythconverg' at host: localhost 2007-01-26 19:58:11.871 Channel::GetCurrentChannelNum(768): Failed to find Channel '768' 2007-01-26 19:58:11.871 Channel(/dev/video0)::TuneTo(768): Error, failed to find channel. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 Channel::GetCurrentChannelNum(768): Failed to find Channel '768' 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 Channel(/dev/video0)::TuneTo(768): Error, failed to find channel. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.872 TVRec(1) Error: Setting start channel '1' failed, and backup '1' failed as well. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.875 EITHelper: localtime offset 1:00:00 2007-01-26 19:58:11.876 TVRec(2) Error: Problem finding starting channel, setting to default of '3'. 2007-01-26 19:58:11.876 ChannelBase(2) Error: InitializeInputs(): Could not get inputs for the capturecard. I have no idea what to do. I checked the URL as mentioned by tjc, but this didn't helped me.
I truely believe this is something small, but I don't know what. Does anybody know how to fix this error?
Thanks!

Based on the errors it sounds like your program guide and the rest of your configuration is roached. Drop your old card definitions and video sources and follow the configuration walk through on the wiki page. Do not try to keep the old configurations around off to the side, you'll just confuse yourself and make things harder. When you follow the walk through pay attention to the details and don't skip steps.
Also, when you pick your lineup make sure that you pick the appropriate one for the type of cable service you're using. Channel 768 sounds like you picked the digital cablebox lineup and are trying to tune it with the analog tuner on the PVR500 which is naturally not going to work. This stuff isn't magic, an analog tuner needs an analog source. If you're using a cable box you need to use an "External Channel Change Command" setup on the appropriate "Input Connections". This is all covered on the wiki page.

Ok, I dropped my cards and video source. After this I followed the wikipage and setup my system again. I bind the video source with my two cards (PVR500). I added the correct frequences to the channels, etc etc.
Still nothing.... Only a black flash after selecting the menu option "Watch TV".
Can someone tell me were to start searching for the problem/issue? I searched in a few log files, but could not find any weird messages. Checked my configuration over and over again and it seems ok for me...
Any help is appreciated.

You are _really_ short on diagnostic information here. If you don't provide the details of what you're doing and what you're seeing it's _really_ hard to help you. This is why the main troubleshooting page on the wiki advises:
Quote: Also, if you post on the forums for help, provide the full hardware and setup details, along with whatever diagnostic information you've been able to gather, especially from log files. Try to be precise and get the details right or you're likely to get advice which is off target at best.
What settings did you select? Did you go through the R5F27 Hints posting? (That " TVRec(1) Error: Setting start channel '1' failed," message sounds like you've got Know Issue #2 from the Hints or a close relative.) What do the BE and FE logs say now when you try to watch live TV? What does the ivtv diagnostics show about your card? Oh and that bit about "added the correct frequences to the channels" rings some alarm bells, you're not fiddling with the channel editor are you?

tjc,
Thirst of all, sorry for my late reply, I was not able to reply earlier (was not in my house to find more details).
Secondly: Sorry about the small amound of information. Reason for this is that I am totaly new with linux and don't know what info you need and where to find it.
Ok, this is some info about my box:
My location: The Netherlands
KnoppMyth version: R5E50
Hardware:
Silverstone LC11S-M300 (silver + multimedia)
Nvidea chipset 6200 videocard
haugpage PVR-500
MSI K9MM-V Motherboard (VIA K8M800+8237R Chipset based)
AMD AM2 3500+
512 MB
It was running about a year ago (you don't want to know how happy I was that I did it with no linux experience! . Then I gave it to a friend of my, because I had to work a half year outside the Netherlands and could not use it. Since then it is not working again. And off course he didn't do anything... (not sure if that is true...)
I am not sure what you mean with "What settings did you select". Do you mean the following information:
TV Format: PAL-BG
VBI format: PAL Teletext
Channel frequence: europe-west
time offset: none
Setup two cards (PVR500 has two tuners). Both:
Card Type: MPEG-2 encoder card
Video device: One /dev/video0 and the other /dev/video1
default tuner: tuner1
I use cable tv, therefore both cards are connected with -> Cable
I can not find any backend and frontend logfile (nothing appears in the /mythtv location).
How can I check the ivtv diagnotics? Sounds like a smart check, but how do I do this?
About the correct frequences. I tried both: Adding them by hand and search for them. Both didn't worked.
Hope you can help me with this, because it is ashame I can not use the best part of the mediacenter. Please tell me if you need more information, and please tell me how to find that information in my system (I do use PUTTY to connect to my system, so I can try things to make it work).
Thanks again for the help!
Victor

Following the links from either the BlackScreenWatchingTV page linked above or visiting the main TroubleShooting page linked in my signature should have lead you to the http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles wiki page. This has full detailed instructions for finding the various log files and getting the requested information.
In general the TroubleShooting pages are one of the best resources for sorting out issues with your system even if you're a Linux newbie. They usually contain very detailed instructions, with the exact commands you need to execute, but you have to follow the links when they point you to something else. For example, the CheckingLogFiles page tells you that you need to be log in as the root user first and refers you to the appropriate directions on the http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BecomeRoot wiki page. It does this so we don't have to repeat the same very detailed instructions in 30 or 40 places, but if you don't follow the links provided you'll never find them.

Hi,
After you have had the enjoyment of doing the trouble shooting you may want to consider the upgrade to R5F27. There were many advances that should make your experience pleasent.
One can only assume that the "other" myth functions are working? Music. video, gallery, etc? Stepping into making repairs when you don't know what really happened to cause the failure in the first could be a bit daunting for a beginner.
tjc's hints & tips should be a very good guide to assist with the road to recovery.
Mike

tjc, thanks for the link to the logfiles. I missed this on the wiki. The backend message gave me a lot of sql errors, so I had to fix it. Tips from this forum helped me fixing this.
So, I have tv now, but it is not perfect. The tv is shocking and images are shaking. Sound and pictures are not synchronised and the movie start to play slightly slower then normal. I checked the frequences with the web-mythtv and those are correct. Can not find any message of my pvr500.
Do you have any ideas? I am close to a working system again.
Mjl,
You are right, beside tv everything else is working. What kind of nice advances are in R5F27? The list I saw was not so big, but maybe I looked to the wrong list
Thank you all for your help.
Regards,
Victor

Hi Victor,
I found the over all performance was better and that doesn't show in the list. Cecil does some marvelous stuff under the hood but seems to forget to those tid-bits
I don't think you would regret the upgrade.

Good news, it is working! I changed the recording resolution from 480x480 to 720x480. I read somewhere on this forum that this resolution improves the quality. I realy don't understand why this solved my problem, but what the hack.... it works
Mike. that sounds good. I will try to upgrade. Will the upgrade change all kind of improvements I have made (like wishlist, remote control, lcd display, burn audio cd option, etc)?
