Post subject:  Choppy music but beautiful video?

Some of my music files play back as if they were damaged, skipping small parts. However when I play the same files back on a much slower laptop nearby, over the same network using any player (Amarok, Totem etc), they sound great. I've tried re-ripping the cd:s, but no change. I typically rip to wav format, if that's a clue.
Video plays back beautifully and has never had either visual or audio problems.

What should I check for?

Cheers,
/Chris

does the same thing happen for mp3 format?

It may be io related as wav are about 10 meg's per second.

it may be a dma related issue..

I think you might have gotten your math a bit wrong.. It's been a while since I've ripped a set of CDs to wav files, but isn't it more like 10mb/minute?

The fact he can play video (I'm assuming over the same network connection) without any stuttering or difficulty would eliminate a lack of bandwidth as the cause.

I've managed to find a particular song that jumps in exactly the same locations every time when played on KM frontend. It works fine on my laptop with Totem media player. However, using Rhythmbox media player on that same laptop produces the exact same jumps in exactly the same locations as on my KM frontend.

I'm beginning to think that this is a media player issue relating to crc errors?

I've been using CDex to rip my music collection and will try to get hold of another tool to see if it makes any difference.

After doing some thinking (it hurt!), I've come to the conclusion that another ripper most likely would not matter, since *.wav files are binary copies of the tracks, I believe, - crc errors and all. I guess some players can handle crc errors while others are more focused on the compressed formats, where I assume media errors are supposed to be handled in the ripping process.

I think I have two options to proceed:
1 To rip my entire collection to another format (lossless preferably).
2 To rip any damaged tracks I identify to a lossless format and then convert back to *.wav and hope that fixes the crc errors.

Cheers,
/Chris
