I just got a DSM-520 media player and it can see my mythbox frontend/backend no problem through uPnp but only two directories, recorded tv and music. Is it possible to somehow enable the Videos directory to be seen as well? Thats where most of my data is located.

Miker, I can't help you with your question as I haven't used the UPNP server yet. I do have a question -- does the DSM-520 display any episode synopsis information for recorded programs? Also, how well does it work for you? Thanks!

Marc

Im petty disappointed in it really. My time is limited and I was hoping for a solution that would just work out of the box. Everytime a new version of mythtv comes out it takes too much time configuring it to get it working the way I want. I thought the DSM-520 would work well but it does not.
Things I noticed:

-The DSM-520 optical out and HD always works. I tried but I cannot get it working on my mythbox
-FF & RW on the DSM sucks. If the phone rings, pause, play, the audio is out of sync. Never pause the DSM or your screwed. Works great on myth
-the DSM does not play as many video formats as you think. Myth plays all once the codec pack is installed.
-The DSM plays active-tv. Its very cool playing youtube easily
-The DSM box is super thin and silent. The wife didnt even notice until I pointed it out. The mythbox is huge, ugly and noisy
-wireless on the DSM is crap. Find a video, select, an icon spins and spins, reboot the unit, then it plays.
-The DSM randomly pauses every now and then. Even on a non HD video? You think it will lock up but then it plays again

Hey marc.aronson,
Im selling my DSM-520 if anyone iyou are interested.

Miker, two things I can suggest trying.

1. Knoppmyth R5F27 came with a second UPNP server built in called FUPPES. (Free UPnP Entertainment Service) It's access by going to the URL of your mythtv server. (ie, http://192.168.0.123 if that's that IP address of your server). It might give you a better outcome than the built in mythtv UPNP server...

2. Don't use wireless. Connect over ethernet. It's not that wireless can't be made to work for SD video, but there are more potential gotchas, and starting with wired rules out a whole class of issues.

Marc

FUPPES
FUPPES - Free UPnP Entertainment Service. A UPnP to be used inplace of the UPnP server that comes with MythTV. If the UPnP that comes with MythTV doesn't work for you, you can try FUPPES. Edit /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend, comment EXTRA_ARGS="" and uncomment #EXTRA_ARGS="--noupnp". Then restart the backend and start FUPPES.
