These are pretty good ideas, but they would be better put to the mythtv development team.

:oops: Shoulda done that first. I'm a little green on this whole posting thing, and the science of finding similar ideas that were previously posted seems indistinguishable from magic.

That said, I found this -- from 2003, no less.

And to think I thought I had an original thought. :roll:

first off, thanks for a great PVR distro!
As I'm dealing with digital cable settop boxes for the first time, I think this would make things much easier for some...

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:
lirc version 0.84 or newer

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:
Allows the use of the CommandIR userspace driver for original CommandIR, CommandIR mini, and CommandIR II (http://www.commandir.com)

Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):
(http://www.lirc.org)

Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):
kernel 2.6.27

For what it's worth, I've got a spare machine I can build/rebuild on a whim, and I'd be happy to test any alphas or betas in regards to correct detection of the CommandIR II and/or verify related install/config scripts work properly.

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:

Kernel support for devices that use the sata_mv module, such as the Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 8 port SATA PCI-X card.

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:

It allows anyone who may have a card based on Marvell Hercules-2 chipset to use their card without a kernel recompile.

Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):

Details on where this module resides in the kernel can be found in this thread, 3rd post.

Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):

None that I'm aware of.

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:
rc.d version of babysit_commflag.sh to automatically renice low priority tasks, such as commflag and transcode jobs.

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:
The original version, which looked like it was going to be included in R5.x and never was, runs from a cron job, which fills up syslog unnecessarily.

Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=117735#117735

Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):
None

It'd be awesome if there was an automated script to add a new secondary hd.

Feature:
A pre-installed heartbeat monitor for the backend so that it is restarted if it ever crashes would be good.

Rationale:
I occasionally have an issue that the backend crashes just before it is about to start a recording. I have not been able to figure out why the crash occurs so I decided I needed a heartbeat monitor for the backend. While looking around I discovered a thread (http://www.nabble.com/heartbeat-for-mythbackend--td5894113s15552.html) that had a config for monit and it was extremely simple to get going. I just thought this might be something that would prove useful to others.

Solution:
Pre-install monit package (apt-get install monit)
Configure monit (/etc/monit/monitrc) to restart mythbackend if it crashes. I have used the following configuration (trimmed down from above URL):
Code:
check process mythbackend with pidfile /var/run/mythtv/mythbackend.pid
  start program = "/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start"
  stop program =  "/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop"
  if failed host localhost port 6544 proto http then restart
  group server

Switch on monit by setting startup to 1 in /etc/default/monit

I realize it's late for R6, but it's more a infrastructural consideration than a feature request.

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:

A smaller frontend-only version of knoppmyth with minimal setup (only frontend, remote control configuration, and not much else)

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:

Simpler setup of frontend only machines, reduced disk space (so that it may fit fast 300X CF cards as HD that still cost a lot), faster boot time.

I imagine a setup with a separate backend (based on VIA, Atom, etc., always on, low power comsumption but fully capable of recording HD tv programs in H264 from DVB, where processor power is useless in recording) and several frontends with fast boot times and more powerful processor/external graphics that can play any type of content at need.

Obviously if I was good enough at linux I would be able to tweak knoppmyth in order to obtain the same result, but it's a miracle with my limited knowledge (and a real success for the developers, thanks a lot guys!) I manage to obtain a very standard multiple frontend setup!!!

Hi Cesman et al

Using lcdproc on r5.5 I noticed a problem with lcdproc not starting correctly some of the time, it is mentioned in http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/m ... ers/330232 and also in the r5.5 hints post.

Would it be possible to correct this issue in r6 ? Maybe put it later in the boot process ?

It may be a little late for R6 changes, but in the event that MythVodka gets the recent fixes for Hulu streaming into SVN soon and in the event that it's included in R6, we will need this.

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:
GNU Gnash Flash interpreter

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:
Gnash is now required to use MythVodka for Hulu streaming, see this thread

Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):
Gnash source, also available in binary packages on most distros, but we need v0.8.4

Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):
Boost C++ libraries
Anti Grain Geometry libraries
GStreamer
These are all source links, I had to install the following dev packages to compile Gnash on R5.5: libgstreamer0.10-dev, libagg-dev, libboost-dev, libboost-thread-dev, libboost-date-time-dev

If it's too late, it's not too hard to fix a MythVodka 0.7 install to get Hulu running again, I've posted a guide in the linked thread above.

I'd like to see the following feature/program added to R6:
Midnight Commander

I think the addition of feature/program would be beneficial because:
Easy file operations and basic editing for newbies (plus happyness and joy for older users that grew up in DOS and Norton Commander :wink: ).

Feature/program X can be found at(please provide a link):
http://www.midnight-commander.org/

Program X has the following dependencies and can be found(please provide a link):
... had I known the dependencies, I would have managed to compile it myself...

P.S. R6 is coming really well; boot is incredibly fast and installation procedure is very straightforward. Once you solve a few bugs it'll be almost perfect!

Install x11vnc by default. Being able to administer a Linux box via VNC is key. An easy way to turn on/off file sharing via NFS or Samba as either a server or client via the menus.

hackmeister,

In R6 you can already turn on/off NFS and Windows Sharing through a menu, you may need to elaborate to clarify what your mean and also include a method of what you are trying to achieve.

I found the Samba sharing setup in the LinHES entry in the Service Menu. Thanks.
