Sometimes its best to wait and see how things play out. In this case, Comcast has unencrypted all of the expanded basic digital channels so I can now record them with my digital tuner. This is a very nice outcome.

NICE. Might be just the excuse that I need to go get a digital tuner!

I have been using an analog PVR-350 with an IR Blaster to tweek a Comcast Digital box to get extended digital service with HBO & Showtime on their "platinum" package.. I get the idea that I could drop to "basic" cable and still get extended cable channels... and for-go the HBO & Showtime .. since there isn't much that I've been watching on them lately anyway! That almost seems too good to be true!

My understanding is that people who only purchase basic still receive the extended basic digital channels, but I believe that they will eventually be shifting extended basic into a frequency range where they can shut them off for people that haven't purchased them.
