Can I share files between my Windows XP computer and a machine running Knoppmyth? Here is what I would like to do. Put together a Knoppmyth machine with a DVB card and hook it to my home theatre system in the basement. In this machine I would like to have a large enough HDD to store all my Mp3, video photos etc. I would then like to have other Knoppmyth boxes networked at my other tv's so that they can access the DVB card in the 1st machine to stream satlite tv. I would also like to be able to download photos and video from my camera using my XP machine to the 1st Knoppmyth machine and be able to access these files from the XP machine as well as the other Knoppmyth machines. Is this possible? I guess in a nut shell I want to set up a home media server that can be accessed by both Linux and Windows. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Howdy, Yes, you can share files between Windows and Knoppmyth PC's. Knoppmyth uses a program called Samba to allow this. It's very straightforward. I use my main mythbox in exactly the same way you are describing. Further reading here. In regards to the tuner card, once someone is watching TV (or recording a show) on one mythbox, the tuner card is essentially locked until the user stops watching, so you can't start watching on another mythbox until that tuner becomes free again. If you expect that you might want to watch different shows on different TV's at the same time (or record one show while watching another) you will need more tuner cards. Dual tuner cards are available too. You can however watch previously recorded content without tying up a tuner. Regards, Kirk. |
