Hi,

Ive had a strange thing happen. I had a power blackout while myth was running. Now the strange thing is now the power is back on I am unable to watch live tv or recordings but i can get into videos. The error that comes up is that in cant connect to the backend. I have been about to upgrade to the latest version of myth so I thought id do a fresh install.

The problem I have is that when I turn the computer on I use to see the "dos"(not sure what you call it in linux) but now i get no signal till the nvida screen comes up.

I was going to reload everyting on with r5f27 to see if that helped but when i put the cd in I dont get any picture. The cd loads and i can here it going, it just wont put anything to the screen. This is weird as ive never had this problem before. It displays myth no worries but no dos.

I have a penitum 4 2.66 gig with a dvico plus and a fx5200 nvidia.

Its ok I opened the box up and found a scorch mark on one of the chips on the graphics card. Hoping thats all that got fried. Hoping it all gets covered on insurance fingers crossed.

Ummm... what is your deductible on a home owner's claim? $500 or $1,000? You can get a new video board for well under $100.

See the Troubleshooting pages on the wiki for disaster recovery and DB repair information. A normal power outage (voltage drop) shouldn't fry anything on your computer, but it can hose the DB causing symptoms like you described. For the future, a good UPS can prevent this kind of problem.

A lightening strike or other major power surge is another matter, but unless the the lightening hit the house or the computer directly (like a friend of mine who was sitting by an open window working on his computer when a lightening strike hit the tree _right_ outside it) a good surge suppressor or UPS should protect it. If you don't have a good surge suppressor, or better yet a good UPS, in a properly grounded outlet, you've just paid the price, and should plan on doing so again and again on a regular basis until you correct the situation.

OBTW - That stuff about lightening never striking the same place twice is a load of crap. When I lived in Maryland I saw it hit the same high points over and over, not just repeatedly but consistently. The same tall trees, the same buildings and structures, the same power line towers and poles, ... I don't think there is a tree in the state over 60 feet tall that doesn't have obvious lightening damage in it's crown. As you might be able to tell, 11 years there made me something of a fanatic about surge suppressors and UPSes.
