I have my combo front/back-end hooked up via an nvidia 5200 to two displays via a VGA to VGA + S-video display splitter device. The "pass-through" VGA goes to a 1024x768 projector and the video goes to a plain old CRT-based TV.

When I am watching a recorded show or live tv on the TV and the on-screen overlays or menus pop up, they are jittery. If I hit "M" and then choose the second-to-last menu item (blanking on the name) from which I can change from "Interlaced" to "Progressive", the on-screen displays and menus suddenly look great. Of course, I lose this setting as soon as I leave that tv show or recording. So, every time I watch TV I go change this to keep sane...which is starting to drive me insane.

I've looked far and wide in the front-end settings for a way to change the default (so that it says progressive) and so far haven't found it. Have the jitters made me blind? Is it an option not exposed in the setup tree?

Please help me and my guests avoid seizures.

I have a related, but different problem with the same part of Myth. My TV is progressive (1080i) and Myth displays it as such (thru the magic of xorg.conf) but it choose the wrong place for the "frame" of two fields to start. If I pause a football game it stops and displays two fields from different frames, giving me a jerky display much like your overlay. Sadly, unlike your case, there is no menu choice which makes Myth choose differently when picking the start of a frame. (The two "interlaced" choices give exactly the same view.)

Previous releases of Myth provided rock-steady views when 1080i content was paused. The 1080i frame starts as a progressive frame and is sent in two fields. The fields match perfectly -- there is no movement in the frame between the two fields of an interlaced frame. The only way to get the herky-jerky effect is to display two fields from different frames.

I think this part of MythTv has regressed a bit in the handling of interlace and progressive content. It seems to choose the wrong thing every time and there is no setting to override it by default.

I found that the bob deinterlacer caused problems with some of the overscan options. The picture was all shaky.

You might try using a different deinterlacer in the setup.

Yup, that was it. Setup/TV Settings/Playback/Playback Profiles:

Find the profile for recordings (in this case, the first one). Edit. Ah, there it is. Changed from Bob 2x to None, and now it's great.
