I am about to try to install KnoppMyth on an old PVR (HMC from http://www.d1.com.au).

1] After installing KnoppMyth, does the target machine also allow access to the Knoppix Desktop (KDE?)

2] Where can I find a list of documentation available?

I don't have kde on my current dragon, but I've successfully installed it before.

Hi Mike,

This is what happens when I connect a screen and keyboard to my D1:

I get no signal to the screen. ALL output goes to my TV.

I press Ctrl-Alt F1 (through F6) and I get a login shell screen with a D1 "splash" screen superimposed over it. I don't get a "desktop" as such, I get a terminal session on the TV.

I realise I could now run shell commands at this point but the resolution is lousy and the splashscreen is irritating.

Ctrl-Alt-F7 takes me to the Myth app.


What the hell do I do now to:

1] Get some output going to the display ?
2] Temporarily disabling the "splashscreeen"?

Disconnect the TV and reboot the box.

It will probably reboot outputting to the monitor, but if it doesn't, there are further steps you can take.

I really wouldn't want to push anyone away from KM, but the Focus of KM is to build a Linux-based set top box PVR. The ability to get to a shell, or to run other X apps is really icing on the cake. I think of KM as a PVR with a side-order of Linux, while it sounds like you want Linux with a side order of PVR. -- if you catch my distinction.

If you're looking to cut your teeth on Linux you might want to check-out mythbuntu. It's an Ubuntu Linux system that has myth added-on. I find Ubuntu really strikes the balance of making it easy for noobs, without getting in the way of experienced users. There's also mythdora, which is Fedora Core + myth. Mythbuntu still gets my nod though.

On the other hand, anything than can be done on another Linux distro CAN be done on KM. It's just that on KM it often takes a little more effort, and understanding of what's under the covers.

In the end, the only extras I really want to do is be able to use a keyboard & mouse to run a browser, and use eMule and/or bittorrent on the machine while displaying the output (during linux sessions) on a separate LCD screen.

This, plus the myth application more than suits my needs

It seems that the config has been really stripped down or I'm just a real dummy (the latter may be more probable at this point). Is it really this hard?

I don't use eMule or bittorent so can't speak for those however firefox is very happy with KM (also known as iceweasle). You can add many extra apps as needed, but there must be caution used as the KM system is carefully put together by Cecil and his team to work as a pvr/dvr first and foremost. If you just install any ol' app you could break your system.

to add firefox, you would normally as root do these steps:
apt-get update
apt-get install firefox

the safety key (99.9%) is that when it dispalys what it is going to do, check that has 0 files to remove and 0 files to update. Those will most likely break something. The only exception I allow is IF there is only 1 file to install and it shows 1 file to update which means it is only updating itself.

Any app that you install can be set to be available via the menus or a hot key (I use alt w for web). Who needs a stinken' desktop anyway. Oh, if you install thunderbird, it adds spell checking for your posting in the forum..

Ok, that is strange. apt-get has always been available on KM and is just a part of Debian as far I know..

Maybe some info would shed a bit of light,

Version of KM you are running?
Video card?
Are you using a pvr350 for tv out?

I think I misunderstood originally, your talking about an actual monitor right? That is you're looking for a myth front-end to run on the TV, while a Linux desktop runs on the monitor? I know that's do-able depending on your graphics card. This issue is independent of whatever distro you're running since it's really Xorg configuration. One hint. If you get it working on Mandrake, save your xorg.conf; back it up a couple different ways to a few different places.

Some systems, try to be more secure by playing with PATHs, especially root's PATH. Try spelling it out as '/usr/bin/apt-get' if that still gives "command not found" use the "find" command 'find / -name apt-get' This will tell you the full command if it's on your system.

Then again if Mandrake is RPM-based (I don't know) you may need to use a different command to add stuff; rpm and yum are common, but I don't know the options. try running 'rpm' if you get an error other than "command not found" then your distro is RPM-based.
