Now that everything else is working pretty smoothly, I'm setting up DVD playback.

In a nutshell, I put a non encrypted DVD in, and the DVD menu comes up on KP automatically (Cool!). When I PLAY the disk, it plays for about 4 seconds, and then a get a quick popup that says 'Source can't be read' and something about do I have permission to read it, but I can't get a good look at the popup because it disappears and I'm returned to the DVD menu.

hdparm /dev/hdc gives me this:

Code:
/dev/hdc:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Data reads work great, I installed KP off of it and avis recorded to DVD or CD play perfectly.

Any ideas?

Never mind- I figured it out. I'm afraid you'll have to PM me if you run into the same problem and need a solution though.

Why does someone have to PM you? Why not post a hint or tip? Asking to be PM'd for the solution is a BS statement. You aren't helping anyone and that isn't the spirit of the community.

I'm guessing maybe the solution involves a certain Hawaiian fruit that grows in trees, and when sliced and cored, looks like a cheerio (only bigger). :D

Cecil,

A quick check of the forum will show that I've asked, received answers to, and answered plenty of questions myself for a few years. I believe in the spirit of the forum and the community, and I've introduced several users locally to Knoppmyth.

Please note that I still hold you and the team in high regard for the fantastic work you do with Knoppmyth and the community, but posting something like this without PMing, emailing, or at least checking first is at least irritating. It directly affects my reputation. I've PM'd you the answer and the reason I didn't post it here.

Except why would the tropical fruit need to be involved on a non-encrypted disc?

That's why I got confused, except I saw the tropical fruit in my logfile. Turns out I had a rotten fruit, which made enjoyment of ANY fruit salad impossible. Removing and replacing said fruit with a sweeter one fixed my problems.
