Hi,

Just a quick question. I have a 320gig hardrive which keeps becoming quite full. The majority of this is tv records which take up over half. I have been looking at transcoding the recordings to save space. I was thinking of transcoding automatically once something has recorded. Would this be a good idea? Is that what most people do?

Another thing is that all my transcodes settings appear to be the same settings, ie High, medium, low all are set the same. When i look at job status and the show is transcoding it sais between 28 and 30fps.
I want as good a quality as possible.

What is the difference between Mpeg4 and RTJpeg? At the moment i use Mpeg4 as RTjpeg kept erroring.

my mpeg4 settings for low medium and high are all:
Bit rate 2200
Max Quality 2
Min Quality 15
Max quality between frame rates = 3

Im running r5f27 and have a dvico plus dvb-t card, with fx5500 graphics card, 2.66ghz p4.

Any help would be appreciated.

You dont want to transcode to RTJpeg. It is Real Time JPEG, where each frame is simply JPEG encoded. Each frame is independent so it cant take advantage of interframe similarities. It should only be used for software encoding analog tuners as it takes less processing and can be done in realtime. MPEG4 take a lot more time to process but will give better results and smaller filesizes.

On my system the high to low profiles were all the same by default. I found some suggested bitrate on the forum somewhere but I can't find them today. But try adjusting the bitrates to find what works for you.

See tjc's post for his bitrates
