Hi guys, I'm a little confused where to start. I've installed Knoppmyth 5.5 onto a new(ish) piece of kit (see sig below). I've used this pc in various guises including a windows machine (XP and VISTA) Ubuntu and now as a knoppmyth box. Now I want to get this baby to use Mythwelcome to save some power and the environment (lightening my bill will be an added bonus). However I'm struggling. Now, although I've started talking about Mythwelcome, this issue I think is separate to that. When I try and shut the box down it hangs. For example when I type a command such as: sudo shutdown -h now I get several messages telling me it's preparing to shut down, that CPU1 goes down then nothing, or rather I still see text on the screen and the fans keep spinning, indefinitely it seems. Same if I try to shut down through the menus, though sometimes it does. Any ideas? Regards Chris |

I've seen this happen on occasion w/ my aged frontend machine (800 MHz Athlon, but usually goes down cleanly). Sorry, I'm not a real LINUX guru like some in here. Just out of curiosity, what happens if you shutdown via telinit? Code: # telinit 0

Just a guess... Cesman wrote something recently about ACPI... Quote: Slight boobery on my part...
Code: update-rc.d acpid start 12 2 3 4 5 . stop 88 0 1 6 . Do this as root and acpid will work. If your BIOS/motherboard supports it, when you press the power button, the system will work off appropriately. |

I saw that, and applied it over a ssh connection. Still the same. Sometimes shuts down cleanly, sometimes not. I've only been shutting it of more recently in preparation for using mythwelcome. |

Just for information, here is what I see on the screen when shutting down. Code: mythtv login: md: stopping all md devices
sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Syncronizing SCSI cache sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Stopping disk sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Syncronizing SCSI cache sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Stopping disk Disabling non-boot CPUs... CPU1 is offline SMP alternative switching to UP code CPU1 is down Power down acpi_power_off_called and it then just sits there, fans spinning displaying what I've just typed |

What happens when you issue the halt command instead of shutdown -h now? |

Google is your friend when you get a nice error message like "acpi_power_off_called". For a problem like this, I suggest you try a few different ACPI boot settings. Some that you can try (one at a time!): acpi=force, noapic, pci=noacpi, acpi=off, or nolapic. Cheers, Allen |

Right had a few spare minutes. So, Mike, you suggested to issue the halt command from a console. Unfortunately I saw exactly the same message and exactly the same result. Alien, I'm doing exactly what you suggest right now! Cheers |

Well, thanks Allen, toy pointed me in the right direction. As it turns out it wasn't a software variable, it was in fact a BIOS setting. I spotted someone on the Ubuntu forums with a similar shut down issue suggesting that he should check the BIOS settings. And low and behold, it was set to S3suspend to RAM. Oops. I'm glad it appears to be something simple. However, this is only when shutting down through the menus it seems. If I issue the Code: sudo shutdown -h now
after running the mythwelcome-test-wakeup.sh. Frustrating. Is the normal shutdown called using the same command? Regards Chris |

From the Knoppmyth menu, Shutdown is called with: Code: sudo halt if memory serves.
If you want to change that, copy /usr/share/mythtv/knoppmyth.xml to /home/mythtv.mythtv/knoppmyth.xml and make changes to the version in the ~/.mythtv directory. That way, you preserve the original and your changes will survive an upgrade. MythTV prefers the version in ~/.mythtv and will use that version over the system default. |

I am making an R5.5 test install on a PVR-350 Athlon 1400 system and getting the same? thing. I press the "Power Off" button in the Knoppmyth menu and it just locks up. I waited 5 minutes and just powered it off. I will try "init 6" or the like from the console and see if that works, but I have a bigger issue to re-create right now. Cliff |

Thanks for the pointers Mike. Unfortunately my 'solution' wasn't a complete solution. However, I will do some experimenting a little later with some of the options suggested by Alien. Hey Cliff I'll post any progress. Good luck. |

It is strange that halt works, but shutdown does not. From the man pages: Quote: If halt or reboot is called when the system is not in runlevel 0 or 6,
in other words when it's running normally, shutdown will be invoked instead Anyway.... If halt works for you from the command line, you can use that. Just change "Command to shutdown" in mythwelcome --setup as appropriate. |

Actually, I'm not completely sure halt does solve it. I've not had enough time to test fully (i.e. more than a couple of times). Hopefully later today. |
