Just curious what people are using for their /myth partitions. I recently read manicmike's post on XFS and made the switch myself. |

The first test machine I threw together with the default, but the next machine I build will try out Mike's instructions for XFS. |

R5.5 Auto install. I used gparted to format a second dedicated recordings drive and formatted it to XFS. I then copied the /myth files and folders over the new drive. I used gparted a second time after that to format the original /myth partition to XFS. Then I edited fstab to make the second hard drive the /myth partition and the original recordings area is now /myth2. I can post more detailed steps if requested ![]() |

That's more or less what I did, except I used rsync to copy the files. It was pretty painless really, just took a good 3-1/2 hours! |

XFS all the way! I used to dread deleting programs that were recorded in HD back when I had ext3. Now it's just blink and its gone! I love it. I don't do any RAID-fu on my drives. (The only time I've lost an entire drive system it was on RAID 5 -- twice!) If my HD programs go bye-bye I'll have a stiff drink (on IIRC) and just let it fill up again with more programs. I've never lost a drive on myth (knock on wooden head) using XFS or anything else. |

Saw this in IRC. You better be sure you have a UPS and that it's configured to shutdown your box gracefully. http://zork.net/~nick/mail/why-reiserfs-is-teh-sukc |

http://zork.net/~nick/mail/why-reiserfs-is-teh-sukc That sucks if it's true... no UPS here. I googled around a bit and it seems like that warning is more rooted in myth than fact. I'm not one to offer an opinion on the topic though, that's just the consensus of what I found with 15 minutes of google. |

Like I said -- if I lose the whole /myth/tv partition (on its own 750G XFS drive/partition) I'll hoist a cold one on IIRC. Then I'll get whatever the baddest drive is at Fry's and mkfs. Some people call it "hardware failure." I call it "upgrade opportunity!" ![]() |

On the whole power failures and data loss theme... http://www.halfgaar.net/why-power-failures-are-bad-for-your-data |

Its a pretty good page. I was amused that he extolls the virtues of a "true" UPS and then goes on to recommend the APC unit which is NOT a "true" UPS by his definition (i.e. it doesn't run from battery all the time). FWIW I think the APC units are fine, and I have one sitting under my KnoppMyth box so I can watch TV by candlelight! ![]() |
