I like having my master volume up around 93 and have set it this way in alsamixer. Problem is when the machine reboots, it defaults back down to 81. Is something overwriting the 93 value I'm selecting on a reboot or do the settings not carry over?

Hmmm.... 81 isn't a "magic number" as far as I know. It sounds more like there's two different places where alsamixer is being set at boot, and your preferred one is being overridden. But that's just a SWAG ("scientific wild-assed guess").
