The default storage group points to the directory /myth/tv. /myth/tv is in the same partition as /myth. Is there a way to tell mythtv to not utilize some number of gigabytes in this storage group, so that the space is available for other purposes?

In the past this was configurable in one of the setup menus, but I don't seem to be able to find it anymore...

I think MinRecordDiskThreshold is the setting you're talking about.

You can always go "old school" and make /myth/tv a separate filesystem. That's what I did to deal with the disk space problem before groups came out. My filesystems look like:

Code:
/             400G, ext3
/myty/tv      750G, xfs
/myth/video   750G, xfs

My /myth/tv partition can use up its 750G disk space and never bother /myth. It also let me devote XFS filesystems to the high-usage partitions and leave the rest on ext3.

Thanks for the pointer. I also found it in the setup menus -- somehow I missed it when I was looking for it before. It's under Utilities/Setup->Setup->TV Settings->General->Screen 2, "General (AutoExpire)". The field is titled "Extra Disk Space".
