Found the solution to the can't compile:

Basically I needed to patch the install for the 2.6.27 kernel. Now I can install the 96.43.07 driver via NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07-pkg1-custom.run I built.
I'm still getting the respawning too fast error though and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf seems to be fine (no TV on this system, just a standard monitor).
Does anyone have any suggestions?
