Post subject: | upgraded to kernel 2.6.27 and cannot install nvidia drivers |
I updated to the 2.6.27 kernel, but can't seem to compile the nvidia kernel modules using the official NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07-pkg1.run to get my Geforce4MX card to work with X. After I boot into my new kernel, the 'c7 respawning too fast' error occurs, I try to a different tty and ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07-pkg1.run which tries to compile the kernel modules, but fails with the following error. Here was the basic procedure I followed to compile and install the 2.6.27 kernel: Code: back up old kernel and initd.gz in /boot untar src to new kernel and cp .config then make config in /usr/src rm linux ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.27 linux cd linux-2.6.27 make clean make menu config make -j4 make modules_install (no need to rm bulid since it's right) make install make header_install cd /boot mkinitrd -o initrd.img-2.6.27 2.6.27 edited /etc/lilo.conf accordingly Here is the /var/log/nvidia-installer.log Code: nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

Found the solution to the can't compile: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr ... 8&t=120884 Basically I needed to patch the install for the 2.6.27 kernel. Now I can install the 96.43.07 driver via NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.07-pkg1-custom.run I built. I'm still getting the respawning too fast error though and my /etc/X11/xorg.conf seems to be fine (no TV on this system, just a standard monitor). Does anyone have any suggestions? /var/log/Xorg.0.log Code: This is a pre-release version of the X server from The X.Org Foundation. It is not supported in any way. Your problem is here: Code: (II) NVIDIA(0): Support for GLX with the Damage and Composite X extensions is
(II) NVIDIA(0): enabled. (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (II) UnloadModule: "xaa" (II) UnloadModule: "fb" (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. These indicate some kind of incompatibility or missing component between the new kernel and the nvidia kernel module(s). It may just be that it can't find the library for the GLX extension, but it might be a deeper issue. The "no screens" error is simply a result of the driver load problem invalidating the Device section for your video card. |
