I am quite new to knoppmyth, and am therefore having to do a lot of experiments to learn how to use all teh functions.

At the moment, i have a tv connected (TVout) and also a vga monitor (LCD - not DVI). My TV is away from the keyboard so when i want to make changes which require me to type a lot, i have to switch the graphical output to monitor by changing my xorg.conf file and rebooting.

I would like a simple way to stop the x server, change the xorg.conf and then restart the server, without having to reboot. I look at all the processes running and it is quite unclear which one i would have to stop and then which one to restart as the command is complicated, not just a simple "startx".

I have tried clone mode for xorg.conf but it doesn't work. It only shows terminal 7 (graphics) on the TV, but will switch to monitor when i go to terminal 1 (ctrl sft F1).

Can anyone offer some advice on how to do this easier?

Make your changes to Xorg.conf whilte the X server is running, then press ctrl-alt-backspace.

You can also "pkill xinit"

If X fails to restart with the C7 error how do you restart it without rebooting or waiting the 5 minutes for it to auto restart?

Do you have another PC on your network? If you do, this whole issue can be avoided if you ssh into your mythtv box from the other machine. If you're running Windows I'd suggest downloading the freeware PuTTY ssh client.

If you need to be in X to manipulate something, you can enable vnc on your mythbox and connect remotely (edit your ~/.fluxbox/apps file and uncomment the line about vnc by simply removing the # in front of it, then issue a $ pkill xinit to restart X and vnc will be running). TightVNC is a great freeware VNC client for Windows and they may have a MacOS port if you run that on your other machine.

Anyway, either of the two solutions mentioned above are way better than what you're describing in my opinion.

Does this happen to you if you issue a $pkill xinit or does your machine boot into this state? See tjc's R5.5 hints/tips thread which is a sticky in the hints/tips section of the forums. It means you have problems with your driver that should be independent of you restarting X.

My question was more for testing an xorg.conf file. I've run into the C7 error testing a specific resolution for an LCD TV and trying to get TV-Out to work with some video cards. If you do something wrong and X fails to start you'll get the C7 error. If you switch back to a good xorg.conf I'm looking for a way to restart X without having to wait or reboot. This is just to save time.

@chunter2 - Okay... if you add messing with the xorg.conf into the mix, that's totally different. I don't how to restart in that case

I guess killing the 5 minute timer and starting X manually would work. I just don't know how to do either under knoppmyth.

Yes, thanks! The ctrl alt backspace works for me to do what i ask.

I don't have C7 errors, as both xorg.conf files i use start successful, i just want to swap between having the frontend graphics show on my tv out and on my small LCD monitor.

Graysky, your proposal sounds interesting using tightvnc, i will investigate. Yes i already actively use Putty to control my linux computers, so tightvnc might be another tool in my toolbox.

I'm sure you'll be happy with vnc, it rocks.
