Post subject:  network problem

I just did a fresh install of R5.5 and almost everything is working. I can connect over SSH and open the myth/video directory up on my windows machine to copy files over. For some reason the mythbox cannot see the outside world. No weather, News feeds and Miro times out.
here is my /etc/network/interfaces
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.125
netmask 255.255.255.128
network 192.168.0.0
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.1.1

On my router that I access by typing //192.168.0.1:
I see stuff like subnetmask:255.255.255.0
DHCH enables, starting ip address:192.168.0.100
Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
IP Address: xx.x.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway: 71.7.208.1

on my Vista machine:IPv4:192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Hopefully thats enough info. Do I have to tweak my router firewall or anything? Its probably something I messed up somewhere.

you cant see the outside world because you have the wrong gateway configured on your mythbox. It needs to be changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1

Judging from your router settings your netmask is also incorrect.

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

I thought that would work for sure but no go. My settings for /etc/network/interfaces now read:

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.0.125
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.0.1
broadcast 192.168.0.255
gateway 192.168.0.1

Not sure what network 192.168.0.1 is, but its the same #as the gateway.

Everything else works 100%.

I even shut down my vista machine, shut down the mythbox and rebooted the router.

Static or DHCP? My guess would be it cannot resolve domain names. In that case, /etc/resolv.conf.

Yes if your not using DHCP then you also put the DNS ip address's in your /etc/resolv.conf

On your vista machine, open a command window and run

ipconfig /all

put the address listed as the DNS Servers in the resolve.conf

I'm not at my of now so I'll give it a shot later on tonight. Thanks for all the help. On install it asked if I wanted DHCP and I said no. Is it possible to enable it after an install or can it only be done at the beginning?

As root
Code:
netcardconfig

It works!
Adding the two DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf and a quick reboot fixed it.
Thanks for all the help.
You guys rock.

Happy to help. A change to /etc/resolv.conf doesn't need a reboot. :)
