Well after a few dramas I have my system working really well and all my features are back to normal. It is really moving toward a true appliance so great work to everyone. After initial install here is what I had to do.

1: Install samba and configure it via the LinHES config screen.
1.1: Add any extra shares to /etc/samba/smb.conf.foobar and add an include in /etc/samba/smb.conf
2: Edit /etc/sv/lircd/run and add --driver=dvico to second last line. Needed this for my dvico remote.
3: Install x11vnc and add [startup] {/usr/bin/x11vnc -nap -wait 50 -noxdamage -passwd XXXXX -display :0 -forever -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -bg} to /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps.
4: Install sheperd and all its dependencies. Created symlink from /home/mythtv/.shepherd/applications/shepherd/shepherd to /usr/bin/perbin/vendor/tv_grab_au. Configure shepherd for mythfilldatabase.
5: Added xterm -geometry 1x1-0-0 -e to the front of my media player settings to try and get xine to exit cleanly. Still not working 100%
6: Copy mainmenu.xml to /home/mythtv/.mythtv and add program guide to main page. Copy linhes.xml to /home/mythtv/.mythtv and add reboot and shutdown options here.
7: Reconfigure daily database dump via cron daily
8: Restore 5.5 version of my /etc/ntp.conf
9: Modify xorg.conf and port over several 5.5 options for TV out. Moved this setup to the new templates folder.

AND thats about it. Up and running but with 2 remaining issues. Xine will not exit cleanly for me and xvmc is really choppy. YIPPEE

You can also just push the "M" key on your keyboard or equivalent key on your remote for the reboot/shutdown menu. :)

For your issues with your remote, etc. please post a bug report on flyspray.

How exactly did you do this? When I try to run Shepherd I am getting the following error:
Code:
ERROR:
Mandatory module 'Algorithm::Diff' not found.

After some googling I found the package "perl-algorithm-diff-1.1902-1", installed that, then moved onto the next error:
Code:
ERROR:
Mandatory module 'List::Compare' not found.

And this is as far as I got...

I have asked for help in this forum - http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19671 but have had no responses. Hope this is not seen as double posting...

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Al

@weblst - do you find that you need the -noxdamage switch in your x11vnc command line?

Not to worry, I have got Shepherd up and running on R6. See http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19671 for what was done.

R6 is very fast compared to my old Mythbuntu 8.04 setup on the same hardware. So far I'm liking it. I agree that VNC should be installed by default or easily turned on. VNC+SSH are invaluable for configuring & administering a MythTV machine (especially one hooked up to a SDTV). I have a couple things things to finish setting up:
- setup an NFS folder to share out my recordings to my PopcornHour box. I tried running the mythrename.pl script and it bombed on me. Will investigate that one
- setup wake and sleep
- the usual music playlists

One question, is running mythfilldatabase automatic or do I need to setup a cron entry for it?

Sorry been out of town for a bit.

graysky: Not sure about the -noxdamage switch. I read about it on the wiki.

hackmeister: Shepherd generates a cron job automatically if you wish. I run it via the mythtv interface but I am having a few issues with it ATM.

albyone: Seems you found the same info I used by the looks. Glad it is working for you it is the best grabber for OZ by a long way.

I use Shepherd without issue.

On my version of R6 VNC was installed by default (I think), I just needed to start it.

I'm up and running. A couple minor issues but overall good. I talk about it on my blog:
