So the big holdup with running the MBE on ESX is the tuner cards, but with an HDhomerun for the HD tuners and a AnywhereUSB like device for USB SD tuners, could I move the whole thing into my ESX environment?

Front ends of course are still physical, or dlna endpoints, but I could reduce my server headcount and justify a beefier ESX host at home. Maybe even use some fancy resource scheduling to bring a virtual SBE online during off hours for commflagging and transcoding.

Crazy?

Nice.

I pulled down the GA release of ESX4 today. I have some parts to collect for my server consolidation project, but its good to know there are no inherent compatibility problems running linhes in a vm.

No issues in my config. You should run the appropriate config script in the KM guest so that shutdown and startup works properly other than that it was a piece of cake.

I would like to go to ESX as that is VMWare's general focus but I use VMWare 2 so that I can still use the base OS of my server to reach through to non-vmware supported hardware.

I collaborate with a number of the virtualization vendors and I can assure you this space is going to heat up and get very competitive. This will be a good thing for the various applications most of play with.
