Does closed captioning work in R6.00.08? I can't get them to work properly. The captions will often overwrite themselves, if they show up at all. I'm the 1080p picture is sent to the tv via hdmi.

I recall them working in one of the older R5 releases. I have not been able to watch any tv recordings for a long time. I'm partially deaf, and my tv doesn't go loud enough for me to understand speech. The subtitles work fine for watching dvd isos in mythvideo. I would have left my mythtv at an old version, but since my wife watches the recordings, she expects updates to fix bugs.

thanks in advance.

What kind of recordings? Since you mention a 1080p set maybe it's over-the-air ATSC recordings, but maybe it's something else.

If it is over-the-air ATSC recordings, I haven't had much luck with closed-captioning playback, but haven't investigated any possible fixes.

These are all qam recordings, from a hdhomerun.

Usually the captions don't show on screen, from recordings or live tv. If I switch the tv input from the mythtv to cable, then the captions are there. If the captions do show up from mythtv, then they overwrite, and the timing is way off. On the few recordings that it does work, the text flickers depending on the background. That could be fixed by adding a solid background to the text, I see options for that.

How should I investigate this? Should I make a list, and see which 480/720/1080 recordings have trouble? Change the video output format to the tv?

Here's a potentially relevant thread from mythtv-users:

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/i ... 0225#40225

Quote: "I should also mention that MythTV's support for EIA-708 leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, you can tell MythTV to favor EIA-608 captions."

I see in the gossamer threads that other users have favored the EIA-608 captions through a key binding, or editing an option in the mysql database. I will try making some changes and report the results.

Thanks ceenvee703 for pointing me in the right direction!

there is an option box in the 3rd screen of

service menu -> MythTV Config -> setup -> TV Settings -> Playback OSD

Which allows you to uncheck the "Prefer EIA-708 over EIA-608 captions".

With MythTV now using the 608 captions, I'm able to view the closed captions in many more shows. Now it's either they work very well, or they don't show up at all.
