okay thanks.

Here is what works:

If I make sure my PVR-250 is tunned to channel 3 and run the following command from a terminal I can change channels successfully

/usr/local/bin/dct-channel/channel (channel #)

If I add the above command into my Input Connection and try to watch live tv the screen turns black for a second and goes back to the menu.

If I tail mythtvfrontend.log I get the following:

2009-11-18 17:51:04.468 Connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543 (try 1 of 5)
2009-11-18 17:51:04.475 Using protocol version 40

2009-11-18 17:51:05.573 EntryToProgram(0@Wed Dec 31 19:00:00 1969) failed to get pginfo

2009-11-18 17:51:05.590 TV: Deleting TV Chain in destructor

Once I take the command out of Input Connections I can watch Tv again.

Any clues?

Try putting the command in double quotes " " i.e. "/usr/local/bin/change_script.sh"

On the "Input Connections" page did you set the "Preset tuner to channel" field to 3?

Hmmm... Ok, did you assign a channel line up to your PVR-250?

Yes. That's what I cant figure out. Everything works fine without the Output Source Script. I can change channels with my remote and everything works if I go straight cable to the PVR-250. Execpt of course the digital channels are snow but I have about 13 analog channels still and they show up fine.

I don't know how to even troubleshoot this problem because I don't know what to look at to see what is failing.

The only thing I can think of right now is in "Edit Channels" in mythtv-setup the channels are setup to be viewed by channel name and not number. When I choose number and exit out of that area the changes don't stick, they revert back to by name.

Not sure if that is the problem and I don't know how to make it stick.

More help would be great.

Also, does anyone have something like this working in R6 and if so, where did you get your script?

Thanks

Here's a person who is having exactly your same problem (found by Googling "failed to get pginfo", one of your errors).

I'd highly recommend NOT recording from your cable box via coax cable and tuning to Channel 3. Get a composite cable or better yet an S-video cable, and some audio cables, and record that way. The thread seems to confirm that the whole "tune to channel 3" thing might be busted.

I will have to get some composite cables. The Motorola DCT box I have doesn't have S-Video.

I removed the 3 from "tune to channel" and that didn't change anything.

Well I happed to find some RCA Composite cables laying around. Changed my mythtv-setup to reflect that was what I was using and still have the problem.

I wish I knew where it was broke because being able to change channels with a serial cable and the script i have (which is working) would be much easier than IR Blasting.

I fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should have looked at the mythbackend.log a long time ago!

Here is what I found:

channel: /dev/ttyS0: Permission denied

Seems the script is run as the mythtv user and didn't have permission to the serial port. So I ran:

chmod 777 /dev/ttyS0

And now it works. It changes channels with watching TV and scheduled recordings.

Now I can go to bed.

Glad you got it working, and fixed it yourself. It kinda sounded like a permissions problem at first--should have guessed.

At least now you should have better-quality recordings via composite than via RF.

I'll also add that giving world read/write permission via "chmod 777" is, at best, frowned upon. At worst, tjc will break your kneecaps. :D
